As #UNECE #AarhusConvention #MoP8 Parties advance work, Parties have provisionally adopted decisions, incl. on reporting requirements & financial arrangements.
Work continues in contact groups on protection of env't defenders & election of Compliance Committee members. #AarhusPRTRsMoPs
Chair Aurimas Saladžius of #Lithuania is optimistic work will advance having reached consensus on a number of difficult items, as the #MoP8:

The opening of UNECE #AarhusConvention #MoP8 is now ongoing at Palais des Nations, where a number of substantive decisions are expected to be adopted at the session that will guide the activities of the Convention in the next intersessional period for 2026-2029.

#MOP8 outcomes will be shaped above all by:
👣 Whether the European Union🇪🇺 & the United Kingdom🇬🇧 engage constructively at the conference
👣 Whether Switzerland 🇨🇭 & Norway 🇳🇴 will continue to affirm themselves as champions defending the integrity of the process.
🇨🇭 In Geneva, the Convention’s ability to function effectively may face one of its most serious test yet: #MOP8 comes at a moment of rare geopolitical significance, with democratic space shrinking and public oversight increasingly constrained across Europe & beyond.
Today, the eighth Meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention #MOP8 kicks off in Geneva 🇨🇭.
The conference will be a litmus test for Europe’s commitment to environmental democracy.
