Because First Past The Post is increasingly dysfunctional and arbitrary in a multi-party system - it kind of worked when the UK had a duopoly (back in 1951, the two main parties got 97% of the votes)

The 2011 referendum was about Alternative Vote - a modification of First Past The Vote - not a form of proportional representation.

The AV proposal wasn't the result of debate and deliberation - it was the product of coalition horse-trading.
