Both hypocentral depth (~60km) and mechanism (thrusting) suggest a rupture on, or near the subduction #megathrust which allows the Philippines oceanic plate to plunge westward under the islands. ⚒️ 🧪

It appears that the Mw8.8 of yesterday triggers outer-rise extensional #earthquakes 👇.
Outer-rise earthquakes break the oceanic plate seaward from the trench. They may be large. Little more south, the Mw8.1 of Jan 2007 (outer-rise) followed the Nov 2006 Mw8.3 #Kuril #megathrust #earthquake. ⚒️ 1/2

It appears that the magnitude 7.4 #earthquake of the 20th of July was a foreshock for the Mw 8.7 to 8.8 of today offshore #Kamchatka.
Both seem to have broken the #megathrust where the Pacific oceanic plate subducts under Asia.
