It’s been a while, but for anyone who was waiting for this medium-term nerdy report: I ended up having more success with #MeshCore than #Meshtastic, at least in my area. It seems the former has grown a lot since last year.
A bright red back case for a Lora mesh handheld and a small set of buttons. Both are sitting on the bed of a voron 2.4 3d printer with a Xol toolhead in the background.
The no one likes the smell of prusament ASA in the morning.

The repeater survived overnight. Woke up to a 87% battery level at 4.05v. Seems the RAK 1W isn't using a lot of power.
Some of my messages are getting out too, which is hopeful. I'm just 2M above the ground. I can't wait to see how it acts at 9M up. Height is might with radio.

Implemented #Meshcore repeater for a native Linux target, so you can run it on a Raspberry Pi with no external hardware requirements, only a LoRa hat.

So at 1 watt of power with a 10 dBi antenna and a .42 db loss in the cable, my EIRP is 39.58 dB.
I feel like I'm getting out a bit better with this new radio, but it's still not connecting well into the network.

We used 3D printed stencils to assist solderimg the radials to the SMA connector.
The lenght of the antenna was trimmed until we hit exactly the 868MHz mark, even though they were fairly broad band.
25 people attended and used up 20 antenna kits for 40 antennas.
Not all antennas were pretty but they work very well.
We soldered ~40 antennas (868MHz) with ground-plane radials at the Berlin Chaos Mesh meetup at @c-base.org yesterday. It was a lot of fun and the results were very fine-tuned antennas for #meshcore #meshtastic.

Looks like #meshcore does not require one, but is licensed under MIT, so could also be easily made proprietary 😬
Tomorrow (Wednesday, 10th) at 7pm at @nottinghack a few of us are going to bring in our Meshtastic nodes to get them reflashed and up to date. Maybe even switch to Mesh Core.

Flashed my SenseCAP T1000‑E with #MeshCore yesterday to check node density in the #PNW. The network lit up last night and the activity surprised me. The mesh scene out here is stronger than people think. #meshtastic wasn’t as busy.
Now we’re getting somewhere! I switched to the US/Canada preset and am now seeing other users and repeaters.
We’d tried to key in these settings by hand (before we knew about the presets) but got some of the settings wrong #meshcore
Getting into #LoRa and #meshtastic / #meshcore for me is trying to relive that learning and being a power user growing up by breaking and fixing. There are places to learn the lower level things and people are having fun doing it together and sharing info with each other.
Just came back from a #meshcore setup party and trying to see what’s possible from my own home. I can’t reach anyone else from the party so maybe I’m the only device in the vicinity, or at least on the frequency we settled on. They may also be in the same boat at their respective homes.
