He's cold. The flat metal of his exterior plating is nothing like Sonic's warm skin. Even though the color is similar, there's no fur for Shadow to brush his fingers through. It's not the same at all, but— Metal's engines hum beneath his exterior plating makes it vibrate, a thrumming Shadow can almost pretend is blood rushing through Sonic's veins. And when he squints, tilts his head just so, he can almost perfectly superimpose Sonic's body over Metal's. Shadow places his hand on Sonic's waist and drags them down to his hips. He tries to ignore the sense of wrongness, the hard surface where soft muscle and fat and skin should be. When he moves one of his hands between Sonic's legs, he tries to imagine a hot and swollen pouch instead of cold, flat metal. He tries—
A hand buries itself in Shadow's quills, a metal claw hooking around the back of his neck. Sonic—Metal—pulls him closer. For a moment their eyes meet, deep red against deep red. Shadow's breath hitches, a painful emotion constricting his lungs—and then Shadow is pulled in too close to maintain eye contact, his chin settled atop Metal's shoulder. Their chests press together. It's all wrong, the indent of Metal's engine where Sonic's firm chest should be. It's almost enough to make Shadow pull away, to make him call the entire thing off—but Metal beeps, and Shadow pauses to listen. There's a pattern to it. Three short beeps, followed by three long ones. A long beep, then a short one. Two short beeps. Long, short, long, short. Then it repeats. Morse code. Shadow recognizes it, knows what Metal is saying. Sonic. Sonic. Sonic.
Pain stabs through Shadow's chest like a dagger to the heart. As much as he misses Sonic, as much as he needs this—he's clearly not the only one. Shadow grinds the heel of his palm against flat metal. He gropes a non-existent pouch, glides his fingers down to tease at a hole that doesn't exist. His body heat warms the metal somewhat until it's not as hard to pretend it's skin. It's still wrong, still not Sonic, but— The beeping in Shadow's ear speeds up. The hand holding him in place curls, sharp claws digging into his skin. Shadow closes his eyes and imagines, remembers Sonic dragging his nails down his back until it was practically torn to ribbons. The frantic calls of Shadow's name, his breathing speeding up. His stuttering moans, his back arching as Shadow brought him closer—
There's a break in the rhythm. Another word Shadow knows: harder. He obliges, and soon there's another demand. Faster. More. Sonic is always like this. Pushy, demanding. He takes more than he gives, but when he gives—When he gave— The hand on his neck drags itself down, claws cutting deep gashes down his back. For a moment—a single, bright, perfect moment—the pain distracts him from the reality of the situation. Shadow can imagine, for just a second, that Sonic is here with him. And that will have to be enough.
