How does #FlowCytometry work?

1. Cells pass single file through laser beams.
2. Lasers excite markers and scatter light linked to cell features.
3. Detectors measure the signals.

Together, this builds a detailed profile of each cell.

Just stumbled upon one of the later #MethodMonday posts of yours, and I have to say, it's a very interesting idea!

It's always nice to see information on research become more accessible to the public (and to the researchers & institutions who are curious about others' methodologies 😜)

So… how does #MassCytometry actually work? 🤔

1. Cells are stained with antibodies tagged to rare heavy metals
2. Each cell is vaporised and ionised in a plasma
3. Ions are separated by their mass and detected in a time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometer

#MethodMonday From now on, each week, we’ll highlight a different research method used at the #MRCWIMM, breaking down how it works and why it’s important. 🧪

Here we go!

Ever wondered how scientists can measure dozens of proteins on a single cell? #MassCytometry makes this possible!

Abstinence is choosing not to have sex, completely preventing pregnancy. It's the only 100% effective method when done consistently.
✅ No medical side effects or cost
❌ Needs communication and planning.
It's a valid choice for any reason, temporary or long-term.

Spermicide is a chemical that kills sperm, found in gel, cream, foam, or film forms. It’s 72% effective alone but works better with condoms or a diaphragm.
✅ Over-the-counter access
❌ Use before sex. It may cause irritation and doesn’t protect against STIs.

Withdrawal involves pulling out before ejaculation to avoid pregnancy. It's about 80% effective but hard to execute flawlessly.
✅ No prescription needed
❌ Not fully reliable; sperm may be present beforehand.
Works best with another method, like condoms or spermicide.

These methods track your cycle (temperature, mucus, calendar) to avoid sex on fertile days. With perfect use, they're 95% effective, but typical use drops to 76%.
✅ Hormone-free, supports body literacy
❌ Needs daily tracking

Emergency contraception stops pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. Plan B (no prescription) works best within 72 hours, while Ella (prescription) is effective for 5 days. It's NOT an abortion pill — it prevents ovulation, not implantation.

Internal condoms are worn inside the vagina to protect against pregnancy and STIs. They’re about 79% effective in typical use.
✅ Gives more control to the receptive partner
❌ Takes a little practice
Hormone-free and accessible. Use with lube for extra comfort!
