And then there’s Samus’s face being visible through the visor, which is a standout feature of the Prime series suit’s aesthetic and was pioneered in the first Prime game. It allowed for emotional expression even prior to the traditional unmasking at the end of the game, and like many aspects of the varia character model became a showcase for the very cutting edge of 2002 rendering technology
Closeup of helmet and visor on Varia in Metroid Prime 2 (Wii version). Again we see the more vibrant popping colors around the helmet compared to Prime 1 and Prime 3. The visor changed too, adding a notch/opening at the top of the helmet which was absent in this Prime 1. The notch has since arrived in the 2d Metroid series, being visible in Metroid Dread. And more of the face is visible at the top and bottom of the visor, increasing the expressiveness of the character. It’s hard to tell, but it looks like texture and model clarity have improved on the face and helmet lines since the last game.

The biggest change here, besides Prime 3’s generally more muted or pastel color scheme compared to Prime 2, is the design of Samus’s face through the visor. Samus’s eyes are more elongated and narrowed, and have more visible lashes. The overall look of the face is more painterly or even anime like, in a good way. This is reflective of the technology used here: when Nintendo decided not to match PS3 and Xbox 360 type specs with the Wii, its developers evidently aimed for a more stylized and timeless art direction instead of trying to simply make low res versions of “photorealistic’ style games. The gamble paid off here, as Samus still looks good and the aesthetic is immersive while running h on a modestly upgraded machine.

As expected, all the details are improved over past versions, with virtually every detail of the helmet modeled or bumped as opposed to simply using flat textures for some parts. The color palette and material features here land somewhere between Prime 2 bold color and Prime 1 reflective but darker hues, while upgrading substantially the rendering quality of both the reflections and subtle coloration compared to both of those games. The biggest change is, for the first time, Samus’s face can’t be seen through the visor. Instead the visor combines the matte like triangle glass first debuted in the Prime remaster with more detailed reflection over the opaque glass. Notice how much this resembles the modern look of the visor for Halo’s master chief. At the start of Metroid Prime and Halo series fans often compared the graphics of these games, but the art style for the suits of the protagonists differed to play to the different strengths of the hardware: the GameCube could do lots of geometry and vertex lights but couldn’t do as many textures layers on a single pass or as much bump mapping/normal mapping compared to original Xbox, so Samus has a geometrically intricate but flat shaded/bumped look with maybe a bit less materiality but lots more style and a visible face, while Master Chief had a basic reflective visor but, especially in Halo 2, a simplified geometry combined with more bumpy and shaded material look to his armor. As gains in specs have brought Switch 2 and Xbox series S closer together, now we see a convergence in appearance between modern Master chief and modern Samus in the suit materials and look. Finally, note that the opaque look of the visor also shows up in Metroid Other M at times, showing up again in Dread and showing cross pollination of 2D and 3D Metroid
