Girls’ Basketball Roundup: Franklin, Hillsborough claim CJ4 semifinals wins, but Metuchen, Bernards see their seasons come to an end Two Central Jersey Sports Radio-area girls basketball teams are on to the same sectional final in the NJSIAA state tournament, but two others saw their seasons come to an end Tuesday night. Third-seed Hillsborough will play at top-seed Franklin Thursday night for the Central Jersey Group 4 championship, after both teams won Tuesday. But Metuchen saw it's season come to and end down the Shore, while Bernards lost on its home floor to defending North Jersey, Section 2, Group 2 champion Madison.

Sunday NJSIAA State Tourney Notebook: Big challenges ahead for Piscataway boys, Metuchen girls, while Ridge nearly pulls second huge upset The tip-off of the NJSIAA state basketball tournament had to wait two days, but we've seen a lot of basketball since things actually got underway on Thursday, and it was everything it always was: blowouts, expected wins, upsets and thrilling action. With an off-day on Saturday before a full week ahead - starting with Group 1 and 3 sectional quarterfinal action Monday, and wrapping with public sectional title games Friday and Saturday - we thought we'd look back at a few storylines from the first three days of play.

Boys’ Roundup: St. Joseph hits the century mark, two-time defending CJ4 champ Montgomery rolls, Ridge upsets Elizabeth, Perth Amboy takes buzzer-beater as state tourney opens at long last It was a two-day wait to start the NJSIAA state high school basketball tournament for public schools in Groups 2 and 4, but for eight schools from the Central Jersey Sports Radio coverage area, it was well worth the wait. CJSR-area squads went 10-10 on the opening day of the three-week tournament, with two non-publics winning games that were originally scheduled for Thursday anyway.

Metuchen claims lone upset in GMC Tournament boys’ round of 16, while Wojcik gets 200th win for Sayreville, Vick sets new personal best in East Brunswick win Things went mostly in line with the seeds on Thursday night in the boys' basketball GMC Tournament First Round, as seven higher seeds were victorious and moved on to Saturday's quarterfinals. The only upset was a mild one in terms of numbers, but a big one for the small schools, as 9th-seed and White National Division Champion knocked off 8th-seed Old Bridge on the road, 60-44.

First Saturday of New Year adds some wrinkles in GMC, Somerset County boys’ hoops Saturday was blustery cold in Central Jersey, but boys' high school basketball is clearly heating up. In the Greater Middlesex Conference, there was the first big clash between 2025 GMC Tourney runner-up Piscataway and the new-look St. Joe's, South Plainfield and Sayreville tussled in a critical Red National Division game, and Metuchen put its perfect record on the line. Monday Boys’ Holiday Tournament Update: East Brunswick takes first loss; Montgomery, Piscataway, Metuchen stay undefeated; Bound Brook wins Crusader Classic again; Ridge takes Monroe Holiday Classic with 2nd straight win There was a full slate of games on the docket Monday in boys' basketball holiday tournament action, with the original Monday schedule, plus all the games rescheduled from over the weekend due to the winter storm that swept across New Jersey Friday into Saturday. Two of the tournaments wrapped up Saturday, with Bound Brook edging Bernards for the Crusader Classic Championship, while Manville topped North Plainfield to win the Manville Holiday Tournament.

Mid-Week Girls’ Basketball Update: Several small schools off to good starts, while traditional powers keep things moving along There's not much you can say for the old standbys, and this is when they get particularly challenged. Just barely a week into high school basketball season, Rutgers Prep is 2-0, Gill St. Bernard's is 1-0, and heavy GMC favorite St. Thomas Aquinas is 2-1. They'll all load up plenty more wins as the season goes on, and maybe even a few losses as they fan out to showcases on weekends, bookending their conference slates.
