5 changes I made to support my senior dog >>> Image shows a soft gray dog cuddling with a stuffed alligator toy under a blanket.
1. Raised food and water dishes. Juni has some shoulder joint pain, and it makes a big difference if he doesn't always have to hunch at his shoulder to drink! Image shows a wooden raised platform that holds 2 bowls above floor height for a dog to eat and drink. One is a stainless steel water bowl, and the other is a colorful 3-layer puzzle toy with kibble, strawberries, and bananas on it.
2. Regular enrichment focusing on novelty and cognition. Senior dogs can experience cognitive changes or decline - supporting them in continuing to exercise their mind is so beneficial! Trying new foods, sniffing new places, exploring new parks, solving food puzzles for meals, training new tricks... Image shows a soft gray dog laying in the grass, mouth open and ears up/forward in excitement. In the foreground, a hand is holding a frozen bell pepper filled with dog-safe treats, like peanut butter or dog food or safe fruits/veggies.
3. More support getting in and out of the car... To support his joints more, Juni knows how to tolerate being supported in and out of the car using his harness. Image shows a gray dog with long hair laying in the back seat of a car on a a green leaf-printed hammock seat cover. He's wearing a harness and leash, and is panting after a fun outing!
Is your dog getting older too? What changes have you made to support them as their needs change throughout their life?
