NDF says chopper at Miss Namibia was no free ride  Allexer Namundjembo The ministry of defence and veteran affairs has confirmed that the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) paid N$22,470 to use a Namibian Defence Force (NDF) helicopter during the recent Miss Namibia pageant in Ongwediva. Public backlash followed the use of the military helicopter to transport Queen Adelheid Nangolo of the Ondonga Traditional Authority and patron of the pageant, along with Miss Namibia CEO Umbi Karuaihe-Upi. On Tuesday, ministry spokesperson Colonel Petrus Shilumbu said NBC submitted a written request on 10 July for a helicopter and pilot crew to transport the two individuals to the event. NBC owns the Miss Namibia pageant. “One of the specific requests from the organiser was to fly the patron of the pageant, Captain Queen Adelheid Nangolo, and Miss Namibia Organisation CEO Umbi Karuaihe-Upi to the event,” Shilumbu said. He stated the request was approved on 11 July after consideration.  The ministry said the NDF has supported NBC at various national events before, and that the flight was meant to enhance the ceremony, welcome vice president Lucia Witbooi, and promote national pride. Shilumbu said the NDF followed official procedures and charged NBC based on the ministry’s loan and lease tariffs.  “This was not an abuse of public funds or military assets. NBC complied with the necessary processes, and the NDF will continue to exercise prudence when handling similar requests in future,” he said. The ministry explained that the Z-9 helicopter was charged at the standard N$5,500 per hour, with NBC covering two hours of use. The confirmation did not stop criticism. Many Namibians took to social media, accusing the organisers of wasteful spending and elitism. “This act was a gross misuse of state resources and a betrayal of public trust,” wrote Tangy Mike Tshilongo on Facebook. “It’s a crystal-clear display of elitism and entitlement at its worst.” Joseph Sheehama asked, “Who pays for fuel and maintenance? Regardless of your role, respecting our country’s values is important. The public deserves more information on how state assets are being used.” While the defence ministry has addressed the concerns, neither the Miss Namibia Organisation nor NBC have issued any public comment.

Miss Namibia ups the stakes with bigger prizes, bigger vision The Miss Namibia Organisation (MNO) has announced an enhanced prize package for the 2025 Miss Namibia winner, with the titleholder expected to walk away with rewards valued at almost a million Namibia dollars. This includes a brand-new vehicle and fully furnished house to keep, cash rewards, and an array of sponsored fashion, wellness and lifestyle prizes. In a historic first, the winner will receive a fully furnished home valued at N$750 000. The house forms part of a three-year partnership between the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), MNO and the National Housing Enterprise (NHE), aimed at empowering young Namibian women through sustainable and meaningful rewards. The house will be situated in one of NHE’s new developments, such as Ondangwa, Omuthiya, Okakarara, Mariental or Katima Mulilo and depending on availability at the time of handover. Under this agreement, the NHE has committed to awarding one new house annually to the reigning Miss Namibia for the duration of the contract. NHE chief executive Gisbertus Mukulu says the partnership is a step towards making housing accessible. “By supporting Miss Namibia and the Win a House initiative, we are showing that affordable housing is not just a basic need, it’s a tool for economic empowerment and social inclusion,” says Mukulu. NBC board chairperson Lazarus Jacobs echoes the sentiment, saying the initiative represents a shift in how public institutions can work together. “We are merging national pride with national development. Giving a home to Miss Namibia is a statement about the value of young women in leadership and their role in shaping Namibia’s future.” This year’s prize pool is not static; as more sponsors come on board, the total value is expected to grow. One of the most symbolic pledges came from Ondonga King Fillemon Shuumbwa, who promised a heifer and N$30 000 to the MNO. Miss Namibia and NBC spokesperson Beaulah Boois-Beukes emphasises that the prize structure is both celebratory and strategic. “The prizes and benefits awarded to Miss Namibia, and the top 10 finalists, are strategic tools that empower her to fulfil her duties as a national ambassador,” says Boois-Beukes. “They equip her to advocate for social issues and represent Namibia with confidence.” Each of the top 10 finalists will receive a monetary reward and access to personal development training such as grooming, public speaking and mentorship. MNO chief executive Umbi Karuaihe-Upi confirms that the current Miss Namibia also receives a N$3 000 monthly stipend and extensive support. “We want to encourage the youth and women to break barriers and become the best versions of themselves,” she says. The Miss Teen Namibia prize package has also grown. While smaller than that of Miss Namibia, it now includes academic support. “We are in discussions for a tertiary scholarship for the Miss Teen winner,” Karuaihe-Upi notes. Last year’s teen queen, Oriana Ribeiro, received a scholarship from First National Bank Namibia and is currently studying finance in Thailand. She also signed a N$15 000 monthly deal with the Electoral Commission of Namibia. Miss Namibia 2025 finalist Tuwilika Andreas says the enhanced prizes are a game-changer. “The opportunities that come with the title are powerful tools for creating real impact,” she says. Johanna Swartbooi, another finalist, adds: “The support from sponsors and the Namibian people has been invaluable. I’m honoured to be part of this organisation, giving me a platform to serve and inspire fellow creative entrepreneurs and our nation to boldly pursue their dreams, as I do mine. I’m honoured to be part of this organisation’s incredible growth as we build a legacy of empowered female leaders.” Miss Namibia 2025 and Miss Teen Namibia 2025 will be crowned on 18 and 19 July, respectively, at the Ongwediva Trade Fair Queens Hall. Tickets are available via Webtickets and Model Pick n Pay stores nationwide. The post Miss Namibia ups the stakes with bigger prizes, bigger vision appeared first on The Namibian.

Miss Namibia winner to receive house in NHE-NBC deal Hertta-Maria Amutenja The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) has partnered with the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and the Miss Namibia Organisation to award a fully furnished house to the 2025 Miss Namibia winner under a three-year agreement signed on Monday. Speaking at the launch in Windhoek, the NHE Chief Executive Officer, Gisbertus Mukulu, affirmed that the partnership aims to promote affordable housing while empowering young Namibians. “We are indeed proud to be part of a process that will instil a positive economic trajectory to three young Namibians through housing, while three more citizens who will be picked randomly via the Win a House Competition will be housed between now and 2028,” said Mukulu. The three-year partnership will run from 01 June 2025 to 01 June 2028. As part of the agreement, NHE will provide two fully completed houses annually. One house, valued at N$750 000, will go to the Miss Namibia titleholder. The second house, worth approximately N$900,000, will be awarded to a randomly selected winner through NBC’s “Win a House” game show. Mukulu also highlighted NHE’s ongoing housing developments across the country, saying 64 houses were recently completed in Ondangwa and 30 in Omuthiya. “Further, 52 houses are nearing completion in Okakarara and 34 in Mariental. We have also started land servicing for 546 houses in Katima Mulilo, while 172 houses are being developed in Nkurenkuru,” he said. He added that the winner of the 2025 Miss Namibia pageant will receive a fully furnished house in one of the project locations. “The provision of affordable housing remains one of the biggest challenges facing our nation. As a result, we need to adopt robust approaches that will ensure that we have a lasting impact on the housing backlog,” Mukulu said. NBC director general Stanley Similo said the partnership is more than just a media campaign. “It is a national initiative to celebrate the excellence of Namibian women, raise awareness about affordable housing, and create meaningful rewards for the public,” he said. Miss Namibia Organisation CEO Umbi Karuaihe-Upi concurred with Similo’s remarks. “For the first time, our Miss Namibia titleholders will receive homes, a powerful symbol of stability and recognition in their national role,” she said.
