Character: - Robert Walton Panel 1: A two-mast ship navigates through the Barents Sea. The ship, called Providenie, is at full sail. There's only one figure on the deck, Captain Walton's, standing on the bow (the front part of the ship). On his letter he writes: "July 7th, 17—, My dear sister: I write a few lines to say that I am fine — and well advanced on my voyage. This letter will reach England by a merchantman now on its homeward voyage from Archangel." Panel 2: The wind blows the main topsail (the upper sail of the main, tallest mast) of the Providenie. The letter continues with: "We have already reached a very high latitude; but it is summer, and the southern gales, which blow us speedily towards the shores I so ardently desire to attain, breathe a renovating warmth which I had not expected." Panel 3: Walton looks, smiling, through a spyglass. The foresail (the main, lower sail on the foremost mast) waves behind him. "Adieu, my dear Margaret. Be assured I will not rashly encounter danger." Panel 4: Through the spyglass, a mass of glaciers or land can be seen on the distance. "I will be cool, persevering and prudent." Panel 5: Walton lowers his spyglass. He's smiling from ear to ear. His eyes, shining. "Remember me to all my English friends."

Characters: - Robert Walton - Lieutenant Pratt Panel 1: The Lieutenant sits on his place and tells Walton "Captain, with them we have the whole crew." Walton holds his beer mug while responding, with downcast eyes "Yes. It seems like it." The yelling of the Russian sailors can be heard. "Хорошо, ребята! Давайте вернемся к тому, на чем остановились." Panel 2: Walton raises his sight, forces a smile and asks the Lieutenant "What do you think we will find at the end of our journey?" Who answers him "Honestly, ice. And maybe frozen land." The sailors continue their racket. "Сколько вы поставите в этом раунде?" Panel 3: Walton loses his smile. "Don't you think that we could find a new route to China or North America?" "I don't think so..." answers the Lieutenant, who looks towards the center of the tavern "But I hope I'm wrong." The rolling of some dice over a table can be heard "Roll, roll, roll." In his letter, Walton writes "I have one want which I have never been able to satisfy. I have no friend, Margaret." Panel 4: Walton inhales deeply, eyes closed. "And I shall certainly find no friend on the wide ocean" is written in his letter. "ООООЙЙЙ!!!" yell the Russians. Panel 5: Walton exhales. "Phewww..." His letter continues with "Yet do not suppose, because I complain a little, that I am wavering in my resolutions." Panel 6: Walton turns to a window in the tavern, keeping a slight smile. His letter ends with "Those are fixed as fate, and my voyage is only now delayed until the weather shall permit my embarkation." Panel 7: There's a snowstorm that has amassed quite a lot of snow on the window of the tavern.

Characters: - Robert Walton - Lieutenant Pratt: 26-year old Englishman. Long and square face, white skin, dark eyes, broad forehead. Hair brown, wavy, well kept. Muscular build. Wears a coat and a neckerchief. - Helmsman: Russian between 25-30 years old. Round face, light skin, dark eyes, straight brown hair. Stocky build. Wears shirt typical for the time and place: light-colored with red embroidery. In this page, he's about to be enrolled for the helmsman position. - Sailor #1: Russian about 30-years old. Round face, light skin, dark eyes, wide sideburns, unkempt hair. Build somewhat muscular, but not as much as the Lieutenant's. 1: Walton is sit on a table of a tavern. The letter indicates "Archangel, March 28th, 17--". Walton talks eagerly to some crowd. Behind him stands Lieutenant Pratt, arms crossed, looking at Walton with a stark stare. The panel starts in the middle of a dialogue of Walton: "…that we will find? Will it be a region of beauty and delight, or a route to far away lands? This will be the ultimate journey." 2: Walton leans over the table, watching his audience with a challenging stare. "And I've heard you are men that are up to the challenge. So, what do you say? Will you come with us in this path to the glory?" 3: His audience consists of four men. One of them is sailor #1, who raises his arm and says: "That'll be a long journey. How much will we be paid?" 4: Pratt gets close to the table, stopping Walton by the shoulder with his left. Walton is surprised. Pratt replies: "Double your current salary. Should we find lands rich in resources, then four times your salary." The Helmsman laughs. 5: The Helmsman smirks and says: "Then double it'll be." 6: Walton, worried, asks him: "Do you doubt the success of our enterprise?" "Not at all!" replies while he brings his mug to his mouth "If there's someone capable of getting to the North Pole, that's us. Count on that. But I don't have hope in finding the paradise you're expecting."

Character: - Robert Walton Panel 1: Walton buys a sled from a merchant. In the letter to his sister he writes: "My life have been passed in ease and luxury; but I preferred glory." Panel 2: A chest is tied to the sled. The letter goes on: "And when shall I return? If I succeed, many months, perhaps years, will pass before you and I may meet. If I fail, you will see me again soon, or never." Panel 3: Walton drives his sled by horse, following a path that crosses a winter forest. However, instead of seeing the road at the distance, he imagines how he believes the North Pole will look like. He pictures a summer hill with a tree. There's forests in the horizon and birds flying. There isn't a single trace of snow. The letter ends with: "Farewell, my dear Margaret. Heaven shower down blessings on you, and save me, that I may again and again testify my gratitude for all your love and kindness. Your affectionate brother, Robert Walton."
