First case of severe mpox virus confirmed in NYC, Health Department says The New York City Department of Health confirmed the first case of a severe strain of the mpox virus, formerly known as monkeypox, in New York City. Health officials said Friday that the case is travel related and there is no known local transmission at this time of the mpox clade I virus. “Mpox spreads through close or intimate contact,” NYC Emergency Management said on X. “People who may benefit from vaccination include people who have sex with men and identify as male, trans, nonbinary, genderqueer, or gender nonconforming; people planning to travel to countries where clade I mpox is spreading and who anticipate sex with a new partner while traveling, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity; and anyone who considers themselves at risk through sex or other intimate contact now or in the future.” Clade I is said to cause severe symptoms and can be fatal. Symptoms include rashes that cover the face and body. According to the National Institute of Health, the fatality rate ranges from 1.4% to more than 10%. Health officials urge those who may at risk of the virus to get the two-dose JYNNEOS vaccine, which can both lower the chance of infection and...

New York City Health Department Issues Health Advisory on First Mpox Clade I Case ... No Additional Known Cases of Mpox Clade I in the Five Boroughs March 13, 2026 — The New York City Health Department today issued a Health Advisory to health care providers about a travel-related mpox clade I case detected in New York City. This is the first known mpox clade I case in New York City. The person who tested positive for mpox clade I recently traveled internationally. “There is no known local transmission of mpox clade I in New York City and the risk remains low for New Yorkers,” said NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin. “The NYC Health Department recommends that New Yorkers who are at risk for mpox receive and complete the two-dose vaccine series that works to prevent mpox.” Mpox Vaccine Vaccination reduces your risk of getting mpox and can reduce symptoms if you do get it. People at risk for mpox should get 2 doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine if they have not already done so to maximize protection. The second dose should be administered at least 28 days after the first dose. If you’ve already had mpox, you do not need to get vaccinated. Who Should Get Vaccinated Talk to your provider about vaccination...

Analysis suggests rope squirrels are a natural reservoir of mpox virus An unvaccinated adult who traveled from Europe to the United States while infectious with measles last year spread the virus to 17 other people, researchers from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) write in The Journal of Infectious Diseases. For the report, published late last week, the researchers analyzed case samples and data from the CDC’s Port Health Activity Reporting System and health department investigations to describe subsequent contact-tracing efforts, environmental assessments, and laboratory testing. The team also reviewed flight records to pinpoint relative locations of the index and secondary case-patients at the arrival airport. Index patient traveled despite symptoms In May 2025, the CDC was notified of an adult who flew commercially from Europe to Denver International Airport in Colorado, stayed overnight in a hotel, and then boarded another flight to North Dakota. The case-patient had a fever, persistent cough, cold-like symptoms, and conjunctivitis (“pink eye”) during travel, and his rash occurred one day after his domestic flight. Travelers with fever and other overt signs of transmissible illness, such as coughing or malaise, should be strongly encouraged to delay travel while symptomatic. Contact investigation identified 135 domestic travelers exposed to the index patient. Fifteen of them...

Mpox Outbreak in Wild Monkeys Likely Traced to a Rope Squirrel They Consumed In early 2023, a troop of wild sooty mangabeys was struck by an outbreak of mpox (formerly monkeypox) — a potentially deadly disease characterized by a distinctive red rash that develops into pus-filled blisters. At the time, it was not known what triggered this particular incident, but scientists have now identified the culprit: a fire-footed rope squirrel. The discovery, published in Nature, confirms pre-existing suspicions. But while infected rope squirrels have been linked to disease outbreaks in the past, this is the first time there has been direct proof linking the critters to a spillover event in another species. Read More: What Is Monkeypox and Should we Still be Worried About this Virus? What Is Mpox? Mpox is the new name for monkeypox, so-called because it was first discovered in monkeys used for biomedical research, according to the World Health Organization. Since then, it has been recorded in humans and is known to trigger symptoms such as skin rash, fever, headache, and swollen lymph nodes. In severe cases, the virus can lead to potentially fatal complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain). Mpox outbreaks are caused by zoonotic spillover events in which the virus is transmitted from...

Tpoxx doesn't improve on placebo in achieving key mpox outcomes, phase 3 trial concludes By day 15, mpox virus DNA was undetectable in 82% of participants in the tecovirimat group and in 80% of placebo recipients (difference based on unrounded data, 1 percentage point). The rate of adverse events of grade 3 or higher was comparable in the two groups (4% with tecovirimat, 3% with placebo). Treatment discontinuation occurred in 16% of participants in each group. A total of 20 participants in the tecovirimat group and nine in the placebo group started receiving open-label tecovirimat owing to disease progression or severe pain “This publication reminds us of the importance of randomized clinical trials—tecovirimat was widely expected by the scientific community to be an effective treatment for mpox and it was only through STOMP that we were able to conclusively demonstrate that it is not,” ACTG Chair coauthor Joseph Eron, MD, of the University of North Carolina, said in an ACTG news release. “Given that mpox continues to be a global health issue, these findings highlight the urgent need to conduct randomized controlled trials to identify safe and effective therapeutics for mpox and other orthopoxviruses,” he added. Protocol chair and senior author Timothy Wilkin, MD, MPH, of the University of California San Diego, said that...

An African monkey ate a rope squirrel and came down with mpox A monkey making a meal of a squirrel may have sparked an outbreak. In early 2023, mpox broke out among a group of a few dozen sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys) living in Côte d’Ivoire’s Taï National Park. Roughly one-third of the monkeys developed symptoms such as skin lesions and four infants died. Surveys of the park’s wildlife revealed that the outbreak began after a member of the group ate a fire-footed rope squirrel (Funisciurus pyrropus), researchers report February 11 in Nature. The findings suggest a rope squirrel was the source of the outbreak and for the first time show the monkeypox virus jumping from one species to another in the wild. Viral spillovers from animals to people are typically at the root of human mpox outbreaks. Pinpointing which animals carry the virus can help guide prevention measures that protect people from getting infected, says Clement Meseko, a veterinarian and virologist at the National Veterinary Research Institute in Vom, Nigeria who was not involved in the work. Officials might tell people who live or work around fire-footed squirrels to wear personal protective equipment when handling squirrels, for instance, or to wash their hands. Several mpox outbreaks have popped up among Taï...

No cases of new mpox strain in Singapore but situation being monitored closely, say authorities SINGAPORE – There have been no cases of a new mpox strain detected in Singapore, the authorities said, after the variant form of the MPXV or mpox virus was reported in Britain and India in recent months. In response to queries, Associate Professor Lim Poh Lian – group director of the communicable diseases programme at the Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) – said: “Since the global mpox outbreak in 2022, all mpox cases detected in Singapore have been of MPXV clade 2b.” The CDA is closely monitoring the new strain and its implications, including any changes in transmissibility and severity compared with known mpox virus strains, she added. The CDA, in its weekly infectious diseases bulletin, said there have been five reported mpox cases in Singapore, so far this year. All of them are infections linked to the MPXV clade 2b strain. The new strain of the mpox virus was detected in India and Britain between September and December 2025. British health authorities found a man in England with the new strain, and he had recently travelled to Asia, reported news agency AFP. The patient in India, who developed symptoms in September 2025, was first classified as having been infected with...

Mpox: recombinant virus with genomic elements of clades Ib and IIb - Global Recombination of monkeypox virus (MPXV) strains has been documented in recent months, with two cases of a recombinant strain comprising clade Ib and IIb MPXV reported. Recombination is a known natural process that can occur when two related viruses infecting the same individual exchange genetic material, producing a new virus. The first case was detected in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (hereafter “United Kingdom”), with travel history to a country in South-East Asia, and the second in India, with travel history to a country in the Arabian Peninsula. Detailed analysis of the virus genomes shows that the two individuals fell ill several weeks apart with the same recombinant strain, suggesting that there may be further cases than are currently reported. Both cases had similar clinical presentation to that observed for other clades. Neither patient experienced severe outcomes. Contact tracing for both cases in the reporting countries has been completed; no secondary cases were detected. Based on available information, the overall WHO public health risk assessment for mpox remains unchanged: the risk is assessed as moderate for men who have sex with men with new and/or multiple partners and for sex workers or others with multiple casual...

Why Nigeria may be missing silent mpox transmission [LAGOS, SciDev.Net] New evidence suggests that mpox may be circulating quietly among healthy Nigerians, with some infections occurring without the symptoms that typically trigger detection by health authorities. The evidence comes from a collaborative study by Nigeria’s Institute of Human Virology, the University of Cambridge, in the UK, and others, published in Nature Communications. While the researchers stress that this does not indicate a widespread hidden epidemic, they warn that such silent exposure could be bypassing Nigeria’s surveillance systems. “What we are seeing is evidence that mpox exposure doesn’t always look like the textbook description,” Adam Abdullahi, the study’s lead author told SciDevNet. “In some people, particularly in settings with partial population immunity, the virus may circulate quietly, leaving immune footprints that routine clinical surveillance will miss.” The study comes at a critical moment for Nigeria’s public health response. In 2024, the country became the first in Africa to begin an mpox vaccine rollout, largely guided by reported symptomatic cases. But the new evidence raises questions about whether symptom-based surveillance alone is sufficient to inform vaccination strategies. Mpox is a zoonotic disease caused by the MPXV virus, spreading through animal-to-human or close person-to-person contact. It is commonly associated with fever,...
