Really surprised not to see working with YP interest/motivation mentioned in support strategies.
Super important for #neurodivergent & #monotropic learners with/without so-called ‘SEND’.

Agreed. Hard thinking and on-demand hard thinking are different things. #monotropic learners (eg many neurodivergents) will quickly run out of #spoons if they are frequently having to switch up their attention against the grain of their own interests/focus, but will do well when given time & space

The first installment of "Understanding Autism", a blog series that will explore concepts from Autistic lived experience. First installment looks at the theory of monotropism.

can do real harm in classrooms, as #neurodivergent CYP will face increased barriers to engagement & learning in environments that don’t accommodate their #monotropic (interest-based) cognitive style. As research shows, this will have knock-on effects, eg on MH & self-esteem. Too many NDs already
I think this is broadly true, but there’s lots to unpack here, eg re ‘habits of attention’. #monotropic learners, eg many autistic, ADHD & AuDHD CYP, require #neuro-affirming approaches if they are to benefit from their capacity to focus deeply & avoid the distress of too much ‘on-demand’ focusing.
Thanks Mary. That’s helpful. Can I suggest that these ‘invitations’ should be neuro-affirming, eg re #monotropic learners’ attentional style? Switching task/focus on demand can be v difficult & draining. @autisticrealms.bsky.social has an excellent explainer:

But these somewhat specialist pursuits might be highly beneficial - especially for neurodivergent students, who v often have an interest-based - #monotropic - learning style.

Likewise, HE allows students to specialise - suits #monotropic learners more than school? Accommodations for eg dyslexia, eg ‘sympathetic’ grading for SPaG, can massively reduce the kind of daily (unnecessary??) extra effort that wears ND children down at school?
TY Stuart 🙏 I happened to see your post while killing time in a café after getting up at silly o’clock so my ND child could participate in their area of #monotropic interest (citizen science dawn bird survey). I’m NT, so not expert by experience, but ALWAYS happy to share the evidence base etc 😊
Sometimes I think, I can't be #monotropic, I've got plenty of interests & mini projects at a time. Then I realise I can't really do more than one crafting project at once (kintsugi right now), or would much rather not to have to focus on two research projects. It may be about categories of tunnels.
Yes, agreed. It’s complex and your article makes that point really well. I think as a rule of thumb, many children who find reading-as-expected difficult are prob ND. And NDs are likely #monotropic (interest-based) learners, so I would focus on interests where possible.
Aw, my (ND) youngest finished their iGCSEs today - final exam taken at non-profit local tuition/exam centre with lovely volunteer reader/scribe/prompter. College place with EHCP all sorted for Sept 🙏 Strategy? Keep calm and facilitate #monotropic interests 🙂
#Monotropic split theory explains how #Autistic individuals experience cognitive overload and #burnout due to forced attention to multiple demands leading to energy deficits + mental health crises, made worse by social pressure so we never CAN catch up.
No, we don’t all have “the same 24 hours”
This score suggests that you are more Monotropic than about 53% of autistic people and about 96% of allistic people based on data from the initial validation study. For visual reference based on the original study, the arrow points to where you would fall on their chart: I know this is may be difficult to see on mobile, but please remember this is just a rough placement of your score anyways, only the X axis is showing data, so it is a visual representation of where on the 1-5 scale you fall just for a visual.

All fun and games until your #monotropic Gen Z kid spurns brick school for studying iGCSE #marinescience at home 🤭
My concern here: if you’re frequently interrupting your #monotropic learners’ intrinsically motivating self-directed study/focus to quiz them on a topic they don’t (yet?) find important/useful, you’re risking monotropic split and #burnout, unfortunately. stimpunks.org/glossary/mon...
Great to see that @beckyfrancis.bsky.social’s curriculum & assessment review favours structural reform to allow children & teens to study subjects they find engaging. This could improve autistic and other #monotropic learners’ experiences of school 🌟
Brilliant insights from Sue, as usual ✨ Intrinsic motivation particularly relevant for #neurodivergent children and those with #monotropic learning styles imv
Never believed Autism bad; ADHD got me into trouble. The #Monotropic lens thru which I see the 🌎, enhances my ability to understand it.
Don't like to compare myself to *non-Autistic Normies* or *non-ND. Wonder whether anyone is normal? but we are all human. My Autism is a good kind but🌬️ADHD blows🤯.🫂
I'm looking for hints and tips to make a quicker transition from labwork to computer work (reading/writing).

I could go on and on #ADHD #Monotropic but the driving thing really gets me going 😣 and I drive A Lot between groceries, grandkids, and kids
Strengths-based does not mean superpower, or deny disability, it is about leaning in to see a fellow human, asking what is going well, exploring identity, championing authenticity, agency, advocacy. Strengths, e.g. #monotropic thinking, can also disable. Knowing a person in their environment matters
