Abstract of the article "Peter Kropotkin and Social Ecology: Between Biology and Revolution," by J.H. Pantel, S. Varengo, and F. Venturini
Figure 3. Principles observed in biological communities and in societies organised according to natural principles. In biological communities (left), diverse groups of species interact in a variety of ways, including competition and predation, as well as mutualism (depicted by the horizontal lines connecting plants with soil fungi) and cooperation (depicted by the horizontal lines connecting birds of the same species at the top right that may participate in cooperative parenting). The realised connections between species are neither random nor hierarchical, but instead reflect a diversity of interaction types that promote stability (the ability of the community to recover after a disturbance). Building from biological communities, humans should put in practice the concepts of cooperation and mutual aid, foster unity in diversity and implement egalitarian principles to build future ecological and democratic societies (right). A single figure is insufficient to capture the depths and facets of even simple concepts such as unity in diversity, stability, cooperation, and egalitarianism, both in nature and in our societies and cities. Our image is meant to depict how an understanding of shared ecological principles and evolutionary histories across all life on Earth can inform our revolutionary practices. However, perhaps more inspirational is to consider the living examples of emancipatory projects with the values we describe here that exist in the world, including the Zapatistas and their revolutionary communities in Chiapas or the application of democratic confederalism practiced in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. These and a myriad of other initiatives are better described in other texts (Gelderloos 2010, 2022).
