If all the music notation in the world disappeared and there were no sheets, no staff, no tab or anything, how would your practice as a music teacher change?
What about in band, orchestra, or choir?

Music classes should be more like art classes. Playing the rep in large groups is important, but so is creating and if we don't make time for it every day, it is less likely to happen.

Discuss:
Should we be playing the music of musicians with controversial pasts? Why or why not?
What if students are requesting it?

Having kids choose the music helps kids stay engaged in the music making.
Create a Google and then show how to search for music at their level on whatever site you use to order the music, and have them search and suggest material.

Do you teach your beginner and intermediate guitar classes to use a pick from day one?

Have students choose which piece they think would best fit as a movie soundtrack.
Then ask them which movie they think it would fit.
Find a movie trailer for the one they suggested, mute it, press play, and then have the students provide the soundtrack.

If you're playing an arrangement of a pop tune in band, and students are playing what they hear from the recording instead if what's written, (what they played is technically more accurate, and they have all subconsciously agreed on it) do you correct it?

Sometimes it's OK to just stop conducting and let the kids lead.
If it is a more rhythm-based piece, there are lots of rhythm anchors to hang onto and they may not need you!
That's a good thing.

Schedule informal, low-stakes performances.
It could be as simple as inviting a class in to listen to a song they've been working on.
Or it could be a quick setup in the gym for a short, informal performance for a specific grade or class.

Once they've had practice learning a song by ear each week, have them choose a song they know, learn it by ear, write it down, and then arrange it for their instrument for someone else to play.

Learn a new song by ear each week! Give them the first note and any hints that would be appropriate and give them 5 minutes.
Begin in a key they are familiar with.
As an added challenge, have them then learn the same song in an unfamiliar key.

Have kids create a free Noteflight or Flat.io account and just let them play with it.
Make something original.
We often don't give kids enough time to play with new tech.

Have an adjective of the day!
Whatever the warm-up, have learners come up with something that fits the adjective.
If it's a scale, play it "spooky," or "rainy."

Use Jeffrey Agrell's book, "Improvisation Games for Classical Musicians," to get kids improvising in an authentic and approachable way in your BOC classes.
Remember, improvising doesn't just belong to jazz and rock musicians.
