Healing Harp – plucking the strings of my heart ### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * Harp strings and heartstrings have so much in common. ## Heart Strings The human heart is so important to our healing melodies. We have a physical heart that sends blood throughout the body — especially to places under repair. And our metaphorical heart is the center of hope and courage when we face pain. I was a wimp. When I broke my ankle, I tried to avoid the pain. For the most part, I did this by sitting still. It didn’t work. Instead of avoiding it, my stillness led me to focus on pain. And that focus made me uncover more layers in my privilege. My injured ankle made me realize how vulnerable human beings are when we have limited mobility. And vulnerability is all about the (metaphorical) heart. Pain and injury can make us realize our vulnerability Click To Tweet ## Harp Strings The parallel experience I am having with creativity started with a realization. I have known over the years how much I love the sounds of the piano and cello. Those are constant inspirational resonances. But recently, I’ve discovered a love for the sound of the harp. Something about this instrument plucks at the strings of my heart. It may be an ancient harp, an orchestral harp, a Celtic harp, or a simple lyre. All of them speak to me when I hear them. Why do certain sounds call to us? What draws us to the sound of a cello, piano, or harp? Click To Tweet ## Hearing Is Believing That’s one of the reasons that World Strings Harp by Evolution Series called to me. When I heard the demonstration tracks for this instrument, I could feel a sense of calm. I’m glad that I was able to add it to the inspirational sounds on Healing Melodies. Evolution Series has many other intriguing sample libraries. These range from orchestral cello to a variety of Asian instruments. You can see a few of these in the video below. Be sure to listen to the track (at the top of this post) to hear these inspiring sounds. All instruments in this track made by @EvoSeries – check them out! Healing Vibe – happy inspirations of all sorts ### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * Inspiration makes me happy. And I don’t believe in limiting my inspirations. When I see a potential new one, I say, “Go for it!” ## Happy Collaborations Once again, I’m glad to say that there are a number of collaborations in my creative life. I’ve started playing out again, mostly because I started jamming with Rose Alaimo. I’m really psyched about performing with Rose. Not only is she a stellar singer-songwriter, but she’s an all-around genuine and generous human being. Collaborations, sounds, beauty — so many #inspirations Click To Tweet ## Marimba, Not Vibes Recently, Rose asked me about marimba sample libraries. I told her that I have a favorite. And just as quickly, I created the track featured in this post. Now, she did not choose the marimba instrument that I recommended. (After all, there are _so many_ to choose from!) However, she — quite unknowingly — became an inspiration for one of my “Healing Melodies” tracks. (Read on to find out which marimba I recommended.) ## A Happy Vibe Some people will say that because this song is in a minor key, it can’t be happy. But I beg to differ. I think the vibe in this track is incredibly hopeful and happy. Speaking of hopeful, I hope you enjoy it. And if you don’t, I’m still quite happy (oops) to chat with you about it. Some people say that a minor key makes a sad song – but it doesn’t have to be so! Click To Tweet ## May Rim Bah But back to that sample library. The marimba instrument that I mentioned is my favorite is Grand Marimba by SonicCouture. The samples, the layout, the features, and the sound of this instrument are spectacular in my humble opinion. I honestly cannot find anything to fault it on. To make things even better, I have appreciated many other instruments from SonicCouture over the years. So, I found it very easy to create a whole piece using only their sample libraries. These inspire me. And so that’s what I present you with. Check out the great instruments from @Soniccouture – #MusicianTips Click To Tweet The main image in this post is by klvngrdnr and was found here: https://pixabay.com/users/klvngrdnr-21857347/ (Healing Melodies album is out now. There’s Nothing Fluffy About This Audio ### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * When it comes to inspiration, there is no fluff. Inward energy is a great source. So are the (outward) instruments that give sound to musical expression. (Healing Melodies album is out now. Listen by clicking on this paragraph.) ## Fluff Abounds Let’s cut to the chase. “Healing Inergy” is being well received in its pre-release form. Thanks to everyone who has early-on listened, commented, critiqued, or otherwise responded to this song. In particular, I will point you to Ether Diver who has written some very complimentary words about this track in his review. But regarding sounds, the market is full. Thanks to hundreds (if not thousands) of virtual instrument makers, contemporary musicians have a massive selection of sound sources to choose from. HEALING INERGY is receiving high praise from fans and critics alike Click To Tweet ## Create Beauty Part of why people are drawn to this song is the beautiful sounds I used to create it. I’m happy to tell you that every instrument in this first piece was created by Fluffy Audio. Formed by Paolo Ingraito, Olmo Chittò, and Simone Mor, this company has produced an awesome assortment of virtual instruments. Many of you know how much I appreciate Fluffy’s VIs. In particular, I use their orchestral string library, Venice Modern Strings, on almost every arrangement for string orchestra that I create. Check out Drifting, Snowy Softness, and many other releases from me for the sound of this set of instruments. The sounds I am drawn to are often part of my inspiration. Starting with this post, I’ll share with you how the virtual instruments inform my creative process on the album, “Healing Melodies“. Beauty is in the heart of the beholder Click To Tweet ## No Fluff Ahead On “Healing Inergy”, the Fluffy Audio sound library ZEN GARDEN was particularly featured. Starting with the opening sounds of koto (a Japanese plucked instrument) and crystal bowl, this track’s foundation is from this one source. I really like the instruments in this library. I also featured their Dominus Choir Pro and Venice Modern Strings (again) in this recording. At various points, you’ll also hear the delightful Francesco Lovecchio: Solo Oboe. Add to this the wonderful “Sylvia – Words – Legato” from Zen Garden that creates the lilting, solo vocal line. And now you have the complete sound set. Thanks to Fluffy Audio for this inspiration. Their instruments (aka sample libraries) are among the best. Check out the beautiful sounds of @FluffyAudio Click To Tweet Let me know if you have any questions. Or if you want to chat about the sounds that inspire you. Sometimes Being Unsigned Means DIY – #IndieMusician ### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * Things change. And — especially when you’re unsigned — clarity is a good thing. ## Unsigned Musician Over the years, many of the platforms that claim to be on the side of unsigned musicians have fallen away. This leaves people like me filling the void left by those failed services. But wait a minute: what’s this “unsigned” thing? Well, I used to prefer “independent musician“. However, there’s something misleading about that phrase. Being a musician not signed to a record label does not mean having to do-it-myself. I still reach out to friends, collaborators, and many more who make this a “do it together” approach. In other words, unsigned does not mean independent. Unsigned or independent musicians must choose avenues for marketing Click To Tweet ## Say “Bye-Bye” Some people reading this will remember how MySpace said that it was going to be the haven for indie musicians at one time. But we all know that this is a great example of a platform that failed to deliver. And eventually failed on every level. Similarly, other social networks have become more challenging for unsigned musicians and bands with little or no budget for paid advertising. These platforms lured us in with big promises, but nearly all of them fail to deliver for the unsigned musician. Other socials have simply become too much of a troll zone. The last thing a musician without a staff needs is one more thing to eat up time. We want to use our time for creating and recording. ## Whip This One recent platform failure is Song Whip. This web application was the easy way to make a page that included all streaming platforms for a particular release. Though many labels used this platform, I think it was especially popular with unsigned acts. As of July 22, 2024, Song Whip is no more. A few of the pages seem to be working, but new content can no longer be created. As far as I’ve been able to find, there was no explanation by the platform or journalists for the failure. Too many resources for unsigned artists disappear without explanation Click To Tweet ## Platforms Unsigned My old approach was to find a different service to take over for the failed one. When MySpace died, I switched to Twitter. When Twitter became a cesspool, I befriended folk on Mastodon and Bluesky. However, other sites like BandCamp and Song Whip are not strictly social. They are functional. In addition to several other functions, BandCamp allows for streaming plays embedded in almost any sort of website. In the case of Song Whip, it was a sharing tool that easily captured the various streaming radios when you input a song name. I tried a few other song sharing platforms. There are some that are quite helpful and others that required lots of technical setup. But too many of them add their own branding to the share. For example, Hyperfollow emblazons “DistroKid” over the album/single cover image. And who’s to say if some of these other platforms will survive any better than Song Whip? ## DIY So, in this case, I decided to literally do-it-myself. I’m adding my releases to individual pages that have a look somewhat similar to Song Whip, but over which I have more control. You may follow the growing number of albums, suites (EPs), and singles that I’ve built so far on a page here. I will be adding more there as time permits. As of today, I have over 112 releases and about 100 of those are available on dozens of streaming platforms. Thanks for reading and especially for listening! Healing Voices – nothing quite like the human voice ### Please share! * Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window) Mastodon * Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window) LinkedIn * Share on Threads (Opens in new window) Threads * Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window) Bluesky * Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email * More * * Share on Facebook (Opens in new window) Facebook * Share on Reddit (Opens in new window) Reddit * * Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window) Tumblr * Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window) Pinterest * * Share on X (Opens in new window) X * It’s true. There’s nothing quite like the human voice. ## Voices In My Head At times, I found the healing process to be very intense. More than is typical for me, I was tired. Naps were a part of my day as I recovered from my broken ankle. As I would start to wake up, I could hear voices making songs and melodies in my head. Sometimes, I was able to capture bits of that liminal song-making. But for every one I captured there were dozens more that slid away into silence. In other words, once I complete this album, it will only be the cusp of what my imagination created during my time of healing. Times of healing may also be deeply creative – #inspiration #creativity Click To Tweet ## What did you ~~say~~ sing? There are voices in this song. But the lyrics are made up words. I could have written English lyrics for it, but that seemed too heady. The time of injury and healing got me thinking about a lot of things. However, the actual recovery was only a tiny bit mental for me. Over the years, I’ve found that every experience is a whole body experience. Personally, I’ve had to learn how to be attentive to this. It doesn’t come ~~naturally~~ easily for me. Still, thanks to InterPlay and some wonderful creativity coaching, I’ve learned to be much more bodily aware. As you can imagine, I’ve been using this awareness during this time of recovery. You can read more about that in other posts I’ve written on this blog (see below). This time, it’s Strezov Sampling. As you can hear, their sampling and VI creation is quite amazing. They are known for their vocal libraries.
