Govt bars Namdia from its HQ Erasmus Shalihaxwe The government did not authorise Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) to continue operating from its Klein Windhoek headquarters following a diamond heist in January.  This was revealed by minister of industry, mines and energy Natangwe Ithete, in  Parliament on Tuesday.  The diamond heist led to the disappearance of diamonds worth over N$314 million. Ithete said that Namdia has relocated its operations due to security concerns.  “As we are currently speaking, Namdia is not operating from the same building for the same reasons and for the same concerns that the country is having that it is probably not safe. So we equally did not authorise Namdia to operate from there while we are looking at the security features,” he said. Ithete was responding to questions from Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) leader McHenry Venaani, who asked about the status of the robbery investigations and the  security measures in place at Namdia. Venaani said he was aware the robbery case was under police investigation but raised concerns about broader security lapses at the diamond company.  “Mr Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, there are lots of allegations going around that there are security breaches currently at Namdia… And I have not seen you in electronic or print media visiting Namdia to acquaint yourself. So the first question is, have you ever visited Namdia? Can you give assurance to this country that a new heist will not take place under the security conditions that are there?” He asked. Venaani also questioned why the government continues to retain Namdia’s board of directors and management despite the heist.  “Why is the government keeping the current board of Namdia while there was a heist under their watch, and the same board is said to be having a number of lapses in terms of security? So what is really happening at Namdia? Why is the board protected? Have you been there as a minister? How can you assure this country that diamonds there will not be stolen again, because we are getting so many stories around Namdia,” he said. In response, thete said changing the board every time a crime occurs is not sustainable.  However, he added that this does not mean the ministry will not make changes.  “It does not mean the ministry will not change the board or that it is going to change the board immediately,” he said.

Namdia breaks silence on security consultant Allexer Namundjebo Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) has confirmed that  it carried out an emergency procurement process to upgrade its security systems and appoint a security consultant.  This follows allegations made by member of parliament and Affirmative Repositioning (AR) leader Job Amupanda. In a social media post, Amupanda accused Namdia of violating procurement procedures.  He claimed the company appointed a security consultant without formal qualifications and that the consultant’s son was involved in installing the new security system.  He also raised concerns about Namdia’s previous ties to Neldan, an Angolan-based company that, he alleged, had access to the company’s alarm reports. In a statement issued over the weekend, Namdia’s spokesperson, Beverly Coussement, said the emergency procurement was done under the public procurement act following a “brazen and devastating armed robbery” at its headquarters earlier this year. “These measures were executed urgently… All decisions relating to these upgrades were taken in the best interest of protecting staff, product and premises, and in alignment with international best practices,” Coussement said. She stated that the board appointed the security consultant to stabilise operations and manage urgent security upgrades, citing a critical need for specialised expertise.  Namdia did not directly address the claims about the consultant’s qualifications or the involvement of his son. Regarding its past relationship with Neldan, Namdia confirmed the company was previously contracted.  Namdia said Neldan is Namibian-registered and operates in several countries, including Angola.  Coussement said the contract has since ended, adding that this transition highlighted the need for a revised security approach. Namdia defended its actions as lawful and necessary, urging the public and political figures to avoid sharing unverified claims. “Speculation, unverified accusations or attempts to influence the process could undermine the pursuit of justice,” the company said. In February, Namdia was the target of an armed robbery in which diamonds worth millions were stolen. Two people, including a Namdia employee, were killed during the incident.  Two suspects were later arrested and remain in custody. Police have not released further updates on the investigation.

Police probe cross-order trade in stolen Namdia diamonds The Namibian Police’s deputy inspector general, Elias Mutota, has confirmed that the three family members arrested in connection with the Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) heist in which diamonds worth over N$314 million vanished – allegedly made a swift getaway to South Africa to cash in their loot. George Cloete, his wife Charmaine Cloete and his brother Bino Cloete are believed to have travelled to Port Nolloth, 80 kilometres south of Oranjemund in South Africa’s Northern Cape province, notorious for its underground diamond trade.According to Mutota, it was revealed during investigations that some of the diamonds were sold in South Africa. “The issue of Port Nolloth, it is true, it was revealed during investigations that some of the diamonds of the suspects were sold in Port Nolloth, South Africa,” he said. Sources close to the investigation claim the suspects exchanged the stolen diamonds for cash at the port town, although the exact value or quantity of diamonds traded remains unclear. “Immediately after the robbery, we understand that the suspects went to Port Nolloth to exchange the diamonds for money. However, I’m not sure how many diamonds or how much money they got,” a source familiar with the case reported. The suspects allegedly purchased some of the assets on behalf of their relative, a security guard who the police said stole the diamonds at the scene of the heist. However, according to Mutota, the suspect in question has not yet been arrested. “We are still busy with the investigations and there are no arrests so far,” he said. “A relative of the suspects, allegedly a security guard who was present at the diamond heist crime scene in January is believed to have stolen the diamonds,” the report says. The security guard has not yet been arrested. Namibian Sun last month reported that the Namibian Police are working closely with their South African counterparts after former soldier Sam Shololo, a key suspect in the high-profile Namdia diamond heist, allegedly smuggled some of the stolen gems into South Africa through intermediaries – as N$274 million worth of gems remain missing. During court proceedings last month, it was revealed that law enforcement in Namibia and South Africa are in communication amid suspicions that some of the stolen diamonds have already been sold across the border. In total, 446 diamond parcels were stolen, 13 of which were allegedly found at the home of Joel Angula, a Namdia security officer. The trio of suspects arrested last week allegedly used the money to buy assets. “Several items that were acquired since the end of January to date, including vehicles, trailers, personal electronic devices, clothing, household equipment, mechanical equipment and documentary evidence relating to the purchase were also seized,” the report says. Among the assets seized were several vehicles worth N$1.37 million and household furniture. They also bought a tyre mag changing machine. To date, only N$40.6 million worth of diamonds have been recovered, according to Namdia spokesperson Beverley Coussement. The three suspects were denied bail when they appeared in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. They are charged with contravening the Prevention of Organised Crime Act and illicit trafficking of goods under the Diamond Act. The matter was postponed to 7 August 2025 for further police investigation. The Namdia robbery, which occurred in January, involved the theft of diamonds valued at approximately N$350 million from the state-owned diamond trading company’s premises in Windhoek. The high-profile heist shocked the nation and led to a nationwide manhunt. The robbery also claimed the lives of Namdia executive Francis Eiseb and one of the suspects, Max Endjala. This brings the number of suspects arrested in relation to the heist to six including Sam Shololo and Joel Angula – a protection officer at Namdia – and Samuel Shipanga (33), a security guard at a private company. All three have so far appeared in court. In February this year, the Namdia board of directors resolved to suspend its chief executive, Alisa Amupolo, chief operations officer Uahoroka Kauta, and security manager Paulinus Sheyapo following the robbery. Three family members arrested over N$315m Namdia diamond heist after flashy spending spree Family members said to buy houses and cars on a daily basis Three family members have been arrested over the N$315-million Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) diamond heist, as the authorities probe sudden wealth, security failures and wider criminal links. The family members were arrested on Monday in connection with the theft of diamonds from Namdia worth about N$314.9 million in January. George Cloete, his wife Charmaine Cloete, and his brother Bino Cloete have allegedly been buying houses and cars on a daily basis, which drew the attention of authorities, leading to their arrest. The police say the trio were suspected of dubious dealings after they started withdrawing large sums of cash on a daily basis. “The subsequent lifestyle and financial investigations revealed that since the end of January, several items were acquired, including vehicles, trailers, personal electronic devices, clothing, household equipment, and mechanical equipment. Documentary evidence relating to the purchase were also seized,” their report says. The assets bought include a Ford Ranger Wildtrak worth N$570 000, a Ford Ranger N$530 000, a Toyota Double Cab D4D worth N$200 000, a Toyota Passo worth N$70 000 and household furniture. The three also bought a tyre mag changing machine. THE SECURITY CONNECTION A relative of the suspects, allegedly a security guard who was present at the diamond heist crime scene in January, is believed to have stolen the diamonds. The security guard has not been arrested yet. To date, only N$40.6 million worth of diamonds have been recovered, Namdia spokesperson Beverley Coussement has told Nampa. The three were denied bail when they appeared in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday. They are charged with contravening the Prevention of Organised Crime Act and the illicit trafficking of goods under the Diamond Act. The matter was postponed to 7 August for further investigation. “While specific details related to our security improvements cannot be shared for security reasons, significant enhancements have been made to strengthen the company’s protective measures. “Some upgrades were put in place immediately following the incident, while others are being executed with urgency. In doing so, Namdia followed the Public Procurement Act, which permits Namdia as a public entity to procure services in response to this critical situation,” Coussement told Nampa yesterday. The Namdia robbery involved the theft of diamonds valued at approximately N$315 million from the state-owned diamond trading company’s premises in Windhoek. The high-profile heist shocked the nation and led to a nationwide manhunt. The robbery also claimed the lives of Namdia security executive Francis Eiseb and one of the suspects, Max Endjala. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to six. This included Sam Shololo and Joel Angula, a protection officer at Namdia, and Samuel Shipanga (33), a security guard at a private company. All suspects have so far appeared in court. SUSPENSION In February this year, Namdia’s board of directors resolved to suspend its executive officer, Alisa Amupolo, its chief operations officer Uahoroka Kauta, and security manager Paulinus Sheyapo following the robbery. The suspension was part of the diamond’s company’s investigations. “As part of the ongoing recovery process following the robbery, Namdia is conducting a comprehensive and robust internal investigation to determine the sequence of events leading up to the crime and to prevent any future attempts to breach security. “We assure you the decision to suspend these team members was not taken lightly. However, the investigation and recovery processes must now run its course,” the company said in a statement. Third Namdia gem-theft accused appears in court A security guard has appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on a charge of theft of diamonds following an armed robbery at the Windhoek offices of state-owned company Namib Desert Diamonds (Namdia) nearly three months ago. Samuel Shipanga (33) appeared in court before magistrate Olga Muharukua yesterday. His case was postponed to 17 June for further investigations to be carried out. Shipanga should be held in custody in the meantime, the magistrate ordered. Shipanga is charged with a count of theft of diamonds. It is alleged that he stole four parcels of diamonds, the value of which is undetermined at this stage, at the Namdia offices after a fatal armed robbery at the premises on 18 January. A Namdia employee, Francis Eiseb (58), was killed when he was shot during the heist. Two men accused of involvement in the robbery, Joel Angula and Sam Shololo, appeared in court on charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder and possession of uncut diamonds in January. Their case was postponed to 23 May. Angula and Shololo are being held in custody in the meantime. The state is alleging in the robbery charge faced by Angula and Shololo that diamonds valued at N$349 million were stolen during the robbery on 18 January. Namdia, however, said in a statement last month that diamonds with a total value of N$314.9 million were stolen and that diamonds valued at N$40.6 million have been recovered.
