GETs Day Forum Explores Grid-Enhancing Technologies in Massachusetts
ISO New England recently hosted GETs Day, a forum focused on grid-enhancing technologies, held June 18th in Westborough, Massachusetts, and accessible online. The event brought together stakeholders from utilities, government agencies, and equipment manufacturers to examine the potential of these technologies. Grid-enhancing technologies encompass a diverse set of hardware and software solutions designed to maximize the effectiveness of the power transmission network. Their increasing importance stems from the need to balance affordable electricity costs with the ongoing clean energy transition, particularly given anticipated growth in regional transmission demands. GETs present a potential alternative to traditional infrastructure projects that can be hindered by financial, siting, and legal challenges.
ISO-NE officials emphasized that while the underlying concepts of GETs have existed for some time, the region has a history of adopting innovative technologies to improve power system efficiency and reliability. The ISO is currently assessing the costs and benefits associated with these newer technologies as part of its role in cost-effective power system planning. The forum’s discussions centered on four primary categories of GETs: advanced conductors, dynamic line ratings, power flow controllers, and topology optimization.
Advanced conductors offer improvements to transmission line performance through the use of updated materials and designs, resulting in increased energy capacity and reduced losses due to their ability to withstand high temperatures. Dynamic line ratings adjust the amount of electricity flowing through conductors based on environmental factors, utilizing monitoring systems to prevent overloads. Power flow controllers, distinct from traditional circuit breakers, offer adjustable control over electricity flow, likened to water valves, enabling precise management of power distribution. Topology optimization employs software solutions to help operators determine the most efficient system configuration, often compared to navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze for the grid.
Presentations and related materials from the forum are now available on the ISO New England website, providing further details on these technologies and their potential impact.
