The region near M42 includes M43 (De Mairan's Nebula), which is physically part of the same cloud complex but separated by a dust lane, and the Trapezium Cluster of hot, young stars embedded within M42. Other objects include the NGC 1981 open cluster and nearby double stars.
M42 The Great Nebula in Orion - unprocessed image with Moon and Sky Light Filter. Sh2-279 is a bright reflection nebula and HII region in Orion's Sword, just north of M42. Its dust lanes form a dark silhouette resembling a running man.
