Markarian’s Chain - telescope processed image. This curved line of at least eight galaxies sits at the center of the Virgo Cluster, roughly 50 to 60 million light-years from Earth.

Markarian’s Chain - unprocessed image. The chain is a diverse mix of massive ellipticals like M84 and M86, alongside distorted spirals and lenticular galaxies.

Markarian’s Chain - Telescope processed image. Named for Benjamin Markarian, who discovered in 1961 that at least seven of these galaxies move through space in a unified direction.

Markarian’s Chain - unprocessed image. Near the center lies a pair of interacting galaxies, NGC 4435 and NGC 4438, which look like glowing eyes through a backyard telescope.
