Leaders worry over NamPost grant deal Allexer Namundjembo Political leaders have expressed mixed reactions to the government’s decision to appoint Namibia Post Limited (NamPost) as the official distributor of social grants. Last week, the ministry of finance announced that NamPost would take over the distribution of all social grants across Namibia, replacing private contractors as part of efforts to centralise public service delivery through state-owned entities. The Affirmative Repositioning (AR) movement welcomed the appointment.  AR spokesperson George Kambala called it a progressive and strategic move that aligns with the movement’s goal of returning control of essential services to public institutions.  “This shift provides an opportunity to strengthen public institutions and improve service delivery for vulnerable citizens who depend on social grants, including pensioners, caregivers and people with disabilities,” said Kambala. He warned that NamPost must resolve operational issues for the transition to work.  He cited short branch hours, understaffing, and liquidity problems that could affect service delivery.  Kambala added that clear communication is essential, especially in rural areas, to ensure grant beneficiaries are informed about the changes.  He said the AR movement would monitor the rollout to ensure the transition is implemented with dignity and accessibility. Meanwhile, the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) secretary general Manuel Ngaringombe said some pensioners already receive grants through NamPost, which has given them more control over their finances. “For those unable to physically withdraw cash, swiping at shops offers a convenient and dignified alternative,” he said. Ngaringombe said some grant recipients still rely on relatives to collect their payments, and in some cases, this support is misused.  “This undermines the financial freedom and dignity of the intended beneficiaries and must be addressed with urgency,” he said. He raised concerns about NamPost’s presence in remote areas and urged the government to ensure wider coverage to avoid excluding rural citizens.  Ngaringombe also questioned the process behind NamPost’s appointment and asked if a public tender was issued.  “In a country still grappling with corruption in state-owned enterprises, transparency is non-negotiable,” he said. At the back of it, NamPost has launched an urgent internal investigation into allegations of unauthorised withdrawals from a pensioner’s account.  This follows after 75-year-old Katutura resident Petrina Sikela filed a legal complaint, claiming that N$10,560 was withdrawn from her account over five months without her knowledge or consent. “Safeguarding the trust and finances of our elderly citizens must be a top priority,” said Ngaringombe.

Nampost investigates alleged pension fraud case Hertta-Maria Amutenja The Namibia Post Limited (NamPost) has launched an urgent internal investigation into allegations of unauthorised withdrawals from a pensioner’s account. This follows a legal complaint and public outcry on social media. NamPost said it became aware of the allegations through social media and is working to establish the facts. “NamPost immediately launched an urgent internal investigation to assess the facts and determine the full extent of the situation. We recognise the disturbing nature of the claims, particularly those suggesting fraudulent additions of beneficiaries, unauthorised monthly deductions, and potential abuse of the procuratorship system,” said NamPost spokesperson Gladwin Groenewaldt. He added that the protection of all clients, especially elderly and vulnerable individuals, is non-negotiable and that any breach of trust will be addressed. The investigation follows a demand letter filed on 25 July 2025 by Kadhila Amoomo Legal Practitioners on behalf of 75-year-old Petrina Sikela, a Katutura resident.  Sikela asserts that NamPost withdrew N$10,560 from her account over a five-month period, without her knowledge or consent.  She receives a government pension of N$1,600 per month and an orphanage grant of N$350 for her grandson. The legal letter accused NamPost of allowing unknown individuals to be added as beneficiaries on the account.  It demanded a full written explanation, reimbursement of the missing funds, and immediate removal of the unauthorised beneficiaries. Community activist Shaun Gariseb, who is supporting the pensioner, wrote separately to NamPost on 23 July, requesting the names of individuals linked to a funeral policy allegedly opened in the pensioner’s name without her consent. In April, the Windhoek Observer reported delays in monthly pension grant disbursements. Some pensioners said they could not access their payments on 1 April, while others had to buy food on credit.  Long queues were reported outside NamPost branches in Windhoek.  The ministry of finance at the time said payments were processed on time and pointed to NamPost as the distribution agency. On 29 July, the ministry of finance announced that NamPost will take over the distribution of all cash-based social grants starting 1 October 2025.  According to ministry spokesperson Wilson Shikoto, recipients in towns and settlements will collect their grants from NamPost branches.  Those living more than five kilometres from a branch will continue to be served through mobile outreach. “This change is aimed at improving service efficiency, enhancing financial inclusion, and ensuring consistent access to social grants,” said Shikoto. The ministry advised beneficiaries to attend regional meetings for more information.  Details about payment schedules and collection points will be shared through radio, print, and community platforms.

NamPost loans exceed N$730m Namibia Post Limited (NamPost) board chairperson Simeon Amunkete says the postal operator’s macro-lending services have extended loans exceeding N$730 million. Amunkete said this on Thursday at State House while presenting the special commemorative stamp featuring president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, marking her as Namibia’s fifth president. He boasted that more than 250 000 Namibians have accounts with NamPost in 51 locations across the country where its offices are located, whereas in some rural areas, the operator is the only financial service provider in those communities. Amunkete further noted that over 150 000 Namibians are insured through the NamPost-facilitated insurance. “As an arm of the government, we can do more if fully deployed with infrastructure to benefit the community in which we operate. This enablement could allow NamPost to give full banking services benefits targeting the low and older members of our market,” he said. Amunkete also presented the commemorative stamp of fourth president Nangolo Mbumba, noting that besides honouring presidents with the stamps, they are a contribution to Namibia’s history in a different format. NamPost celebrates Namibia’s leadership with stamps featuring all past and present presidents. Receiving the stamps, Nandi-Ndaitwah indicated that post communication is still regarded as one of the important means of communication, which has evolved to serve many purposes, given the operations in financial activities. She said Namibians, especially the elderly, find NamPost very convenient for financial management, while internationally, the post office is recognised as the centre for all mail coming from all over the world. “The post office remains historically the most important connector in the world now and possibly in the future,” she said. The president further commended NamPost for implementing the commemorative stamps, saying they serve as a reminder to Namibians and the world at large about the democratic process in Namibia, particularly the peaceful transitions or successions from one president to the other, including during the difficult time of the passing of the country’s third president Hage Geingob. “As a nation, we understand that the stamp of our fourth president is coming this time because we know he came during a difficult and dramatic situation,” she noted. – Nampa The post NamPost loans exceed N$730m appeared first on The Namibian.
