We are not stopping Simon, Ninja fight – Oshana police chief
Oshana police regional commander commissioner Naftal Sakaria says the police will not stop the much-anticipated boxing exhibition between former world champion Harry Simon and Paulus ‘Ninja’ Shimweefeleni.
Sakaria’s comments follow a report by Confidente on Friday, that the Namibia Boxing and Wrestling Control Board had instructed the police at Oshakati not to allow the fight to take place.
Simon and Shimweefeleni are scheduled to face off in an exhibition bout at Oshakati on Saturday.
Sakaria clarifies that the police would only intervene in a boxing event, sanctioned or not, if there were concerns over public safety or the potential for violence.
“We are not going to interfere in this matter because we don’t believe it is against the public interest,” he says.
He adds that the event is linked to crime prevention initiatives.
Sakaria also says the boxing control board had been informed of the police’s position during a meeting at the inspector general’s office on Friday afternoon.
“We are not going to be dealing with their administrative issues. We are not stopping anything,” Sakaria says.
