"Miss Grace Howard, daughter of Joseph Howard Jr., has gone back to her work among the Indians at Crow Creek Agency in SD. Miss Howard has a grant of eighty acres of land from the govt and has ten Indian girls living in the house with her. Her idea seems to be in the line of industrial work. She says "The girls who return from Hampton Institute have learned some of the ways of civilization, but there is absolutely no incentive for them to go on with the new life they have begun. For the Indian boy there is always the farm. But for the girl there is nothing. Housekeeping in a Sioux cabin is too simple to furnish much occupation."

"INDIAN ASSIMILATION
"Authoritative announcement from Washington that President Roosevelt earnestly David's, and will recommend the complete adoption of, the policy of Commissioner of Indian Affairs Jones- a policy of the non-productive Indian into the ranks of the workers of the world.-
Brings vividly before the minds of middle-aged men and women the days when the "indian question" we we want to call it, was a burning question. Memory recalls indignation meetings in Massachusetts and the fulminations of Senator Dawes against the cruelty of the white man to the red, and all the rest of it.
The policy of assimilation of the Indian into the citizenship of the states and territories has been urger by The Times for years. The policy now pursued at Pine Ridge and elsewhere of refusing to give him work at $1.25 to $1.50 when possible, is a stay towards the end. Continuity of work is one of the things the Indian must learn."

Mention of "Indian #Assimilation", "Indian question" & withholding of rations.

Notice how Native culture became forbidden during the same time labor and gender roles enforced.

"Commissioner Jones calls attention to the fact that the nation has extended over a billion dollars in subduing and attempting to educate the Indians only to learn the absolute failure of the 'ration system' as a device for making useful or productive citizens of them. That the plot of feeding the Indian at public expense on reservations was the outgrowth of a mistaken philanthropy and was foolish in that it exempted the Indian from the natural and inexorable law that men must earn his living by labor of some kind of now universally recognized. How to rectify the errors growing out of this policy and supplant it by a system that would ultimately induce the Indian to put his hand to the plow is the problem that had engaged the study and activity of commissioner Jones since his induction in office."

The article describinh the "ration system" as a failure, because: "it exempted the Indian from the natural and inexorable law that men must earn his living by labor of some kind of now universally recognized." #NativeLabor #Capitalism

Newspaper clipping for linked article:
...he must live like the white man, and consequently he must learn to work. The great thing is to teach him to love work, and then to love work that is before him and you to learn how to do it. Teach the boys a trade of sons kind, and teach them farming, which is, of course, the most important of all. Teach the girls the ordinary industries for which they are fitted, and which they must practice, and I believe it will do more for the elevation of the race than teaching thw boys."

I've broken down quite a bit about how Institutions reinforced gender roles with #NativeLabor as a requirement of boarding school assimilation. Haven't seen folks bring the convo to the table about labor and gender in other context outside of the typical "emotional labor", "domestic labor" convos.

Like the reason they kept calling Natives devils was cuz they wanted gold and other acts of genocide. As well as forcing #NativeLabor via assimilation, real estate expansion and Industrialization,

Also why I've specifically begun naming #NativeLabor

Because again these nuances get left out. But just because society pushes exceptionalism towards Natives doesn't mean the capitalism and colonialism we experience through extractive and retail industries isn't real.

Specifically began writing about #NativeLabor because I see the hierarchies and validation/invalidation of labor as another form of reinforcing caste structures via colonialism.

#NativeLabor is a form of labor trafficking that is considered permissible by dominant society.

3 0 0 1

There's a lot of ways that #NativeLabor has been perceived as monolithic as a result of Native labor being undervalued, and Native displacement being deemed ungrieviable.

"One thing you can say, and that is that as long as the Indian has an almshouse to go to, just so long will he be a pauper. If you have almshouses among white men you will have white paupers, or civilized paupers, and almshouses among Indians means savage paupers. They must realize that with out labor there will be no food, and they must learn to appreciate the results of labor. An Indian kills a moose and invites all the 'vagabond Indians' he knows to partake of the feast. All sit around and pick the bones of that animal clean, the owner not caring whether his family has a sup for the morrow. When the same Indian goes to work and tills the soil and
is rewarded with a crop of grain and the vagabond Indians come around and ask to partake of his bounty he says "No, if you want
corn go and work for it as I have done."

Another reason that I suspect that #NativeLabor is discounted, and ppl tend to talk about boarding schools more from a trauma porn assimilation standpoint , without also incorporating the forced labor involved.
