Construction begins on first small modular reactor in Ontario, Canada as part of Darlington New Nuclear Project
Construction has commenced on the initial of four small modular reactors (SMRs) in Ontario, Canada, marking a significant step in the Darlington New Nuclear Project. The project, costing an estimated US$4.38 billion for this first reactor, is situated on a nuclear site in Clarington and represents a portion of the larger, US$15 billion Darlington New Nuclear Project. The BWRX-300 reactor is anticipated to provide clean electricity capable of powering over 300,000 homes, utilizing commercially available uranium. This deployment represents the first of its kind within the G7 nations. Ontario Power Generation anticipates the project will be fully operational by 2030, following site preparation that began in December 2022. Approval to construct the unit was granted by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission in April. A network of over 80 Ontario-based companies have partnered with Ontario Power Generation to contribute to the project’s delivery, supported by a US$1.3 billion alliance construction contract secured by Kiewit Nuclear Canada and Aecon. This construction phase is further facilitated through collaboration with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and AtkinsRéalis. The project is located in Clarington, Ontario and is slated for commercial operation in 2030. Key partners include Kiewit Nuclear Canada, Aecon, GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, and AtkinsRéalis. The project is expected to generate approximately 18,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly, and inject an estimated US$500 million annually into the provincial economy. Overall, the Darlington New Nuclear Project is projected to add CAD$38.5 billion to Canada’s GDP over the next six years, encompassing construction, operation, and maintenance. The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has recognized the project as the most economically viable and secure option for meeting Ontario’s anticipated 75% increase in electricity demand by 2050, surpassing alternative non-emitting generation methods.
