100 Years of Neues Bauen (2/3) - The Super-Kitchen - Watch the full documentary | ARTE in English A century ago, modern architecture was born with idealistic architects wanting to build decent and affordable housing for all. This episode looks at the Frankfurt Kitchen, a design by Austrian architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky for social housing where everything is within easy reach.

Very much inclined towards the view we've gone backwards since the Frankfurt Kitchen.

"The Pillars of Society," is a grotesque caricature of the corrupt, self-serving, and militaristic elite of Germany's Weimar Republic, which Grosz believed was responsible for the nation's troubles and supported the rise of fascism. Through vivid, distorted figures of businessmen, generals, and clergy, Grosz depicts the church, capitalism, and the military as the true "pillars" propping up a depraved society. This work is a prime example of the New Objectivity movement's use of violent social satire to expose the grim realities of the era.

In the 1920s, the portrait became a favorite subject of innovative
artistic strategies. In reflecting on the essentials, the artistic moment shifts more emphatically than ever between model and likeness. And yet, the individualizing moment is retained despite stylizing representations in female portraits, such as those by Otto Dix and Rudolf Belling. In "Bildnis Frau Martha Dix" (Portrait of Mrs. Martha Dix), whom Dix married in 1923, the artist emphasizes, for instance, not only her distinctive facial features but also her avant-garde haircut. The monochrome color scheme and the accentuation of the two-dimensional image surface support her seemingly iconic presence as does the
concomitant exaggeration and
simultaneous reduction of details.
