#NIF He pretty routinely clocks it when people are trying to feed him bullshit — Meng-dage’s terrible lies hate to see Prince Jing coming! And he learns the political game effectively enough in 18 months to pull nearly the entire court to his side vs. his father on the Chiyan matter.

#NIF Again, this man clocks that MCS isn’t all he appears to be the minute they meet. He intuits his way to MCS = LCS through the same clues of intimacy and familiarity that Nihuang & Consort Jing do (Ep 46); he just dismisses the possibility b/c he’s more of a realist than anyone wants to admit.

#NIF Finally, calling Prince Jing stupid b/c of the “dangers of [his] blind loyalty,” pretty spectacularly misreads him and misses the point of the entire series. You mean the blind loyalty *underpinning all the heroes’ actions*? That is MCS’ raison d’etre? That blind loyalty? Girl, I GUESS.

#NIF But yeah, the show makes the same point in Ep 51 that Prince Jing makes in Ep 33: if you’d sacrifice those you care about/who care about you/innocents for your own selfish ends, you’ll lose everything that would ever allow you to call yourself “just.”

#NIF And listen, I get it: MCS was never going to just stand by and let WZ die. I’ve no doubt he was going to come up with a similar plan to save WZ; his concern was always that it not be connectable to Prince Jing. But *Jingyan* doesn’t know that b/c MCS is initially saying the opposite thing!

#NIF It’s not morally, ethically, or spiritually OK to *not even try* before deciding that WZ’s death is a small price to pay for Prince Jing’s own ends. Only if there was truly no other way would it even be in the same continent of OK.

#NIF “But LaT! That was 10 ppl vs. 1!” The principle is the same, Patrice. If Prince Jing lets Wei Zheng die (horribly BTW) just to preserve his status & favor with the Emperor — status & favor he has gained *for the benefit of WZ and others* — he & everyone going along w/it lose the same things.

#NIF He correctly points out that MCS wouldn’t be able to live w/them sacrificing themselves like that. And he explicitly notes that the person who *was* okay with 10 people basically killing themselves so he could live got a new lease on life but also lost his soul & morality in the process.

#NIF Lin Chen tells them that yes, someone was cured of it, but under circumstances that required the complete exsanguination and death of 10 other people. And when LG, ZP, and WZ start making noises about how they’d be willing to die to save MCS, Lin Chen castigates them.

#NIF But in typical fashion with this banger of a show, where repeat viewings are rewarded, the show itself tells us Prince Jing is right here when, 18 episodes later, Lin Chen has a similar conversation with Wei Zheng, Zhen Ping, and Li Gang about curing MCS of the poison of the bitter flame.

In addition to his own anxieties re: what Jingyan would think of him if Jingyan knew the truth, MCS mistakenly thinks he’s still dealing w/the person Jingyan was at 19. He’s not. And this, coupled w/Jingyan correctly sussing out that MCS is hiding something, is why their dynamic is so tricky. #NIF

I realize MCS isn’t privy to the scenes where Prince Jing confides in those 3, or where Zhanying steps in to pull him back, but the very fact that he just assumes Jingyan doesn’t have people like this, that’s he’s the only one who can be that for Jingyan is short-sighted & a little arrogant. #NIF

His insistence in Ep 48 that he’s the only person who can ‘placate’ Jingyan ignores that Jingyan doesn’t need placating so much as being dealt with directly and honestly. It also ignores that Jingyan does, in fact, have confidants in Lie Zhanying and Shen Zhui and Cai Quan. #NIF

I’ve said before that MCS spends the whole series struggling w/the idea Prince Jing also changed during their 12 years apart. For example, his insistence that he has to preserve Jingyan’s ‘purity’ of spirit-while arguably very romantic-ignores that Jingyan is more of a realist than MCS thinks. #NIF

In all seriousness though, the more I watch the series as a whole or select arcs or episodes, the more clear to me it is that Prince Jing is actually something of a blind spot for MCS. Or, to be more precise, the way MCS thinks about Prince Jing is one of his blind spots. #NIF
