Definitely a prime #NotALion
#NotALion was the hashtag for badly-drawn lions on Old Twitter.

There used to be a great #NotALion hashtag on the bad site, for unconvincing mediaeval depictions. I think this maybe-dog falls into that category.
On today's Moby-Dick chapters:
1. My inner bibliographer is always happy to get to the chapter with the reference to Aldus Manutius and his dolphin-and-anchor printer's mark (but a dolphin is not a whale, Ishmael!).
2. RIP Herman Melville, you would have loved the #NotALion hashtag. 🐋
The illustrative programme is even more interesting and complex than we thought. We start with the Labors and Zodiac in the calendar (which is very much use of Paris). This is July from the collection @grinnellcollege.bsky.social Museum of Art. JUST LOOK AT THAT #NOTALION!:
Coat of arms with a griffon and a lion. From Newberry Library Inc. 1082.
Set of metal plaques, beasts of the evangelists and above them a stripy semicircle ("clouds") with a pigeon head down from it with tiny flailing feet
Is there an equivalent to #NotALion for plummeting pigeons/holy spirits? This one is especially hurtling.
The lid of a wooden cup, carved with what is (probably) supposed to be a lion, but with such skinny legs it looks kind of monkey-like. The mouth is full of teeth and a long happy toungue.
I have excellent colleagues who send me great #notalion 😁 #museumlife
A thread for #NotALion fans!
I love the #NotaLion hashtag. A happy place to browse through. Thanks for this contribution.

Woodcut of the city of Milan, with a lion drawn in over the gate.
What's the Lion of St. Mark doing in MILAN?!
Someone doodled the famous winged feline symbol of Venice onto Milan, and I want to know why! There are pen and ink additions throughout the city woodcuts as well as some wacky collage elements...

That's outstanding in concept. Presumably you know the #notalion hashtag? Not exclusively populated by Jerome and his companion but plenty there.

🦁🦁🦁 15th c. Jerome's Epistles at #NewberryLibrary (Inc. 5675) with SO MANY woodcuts of him posing with his lion. 20? 30? I lost track ... At least they finally showed his domestication via thorn removal (on the last page)! #Caturday #NotALion #Woodcuts 1/?
New term to me, but it's so perfect for this domesticated #NotALion! I'll show more of this fine feline on Saturday, he's in Jerome's entire biographical woodcut cycle in this book!
#NotALion (Btw the guy with the halo is St Jerome!)
Maybe #notabeaver ought to be a hashtag, along with #notalion ?
