Three tawny frogmouth birds, two parents and one baby nestled next to a parent on the branch of a gum tree. The juvenile is about 2 months old and the family has been spotted in various trees in this stand of trees next to Edgars Creek, a tributary to the Merri, that flows into the Yarra River.

Yesterday was a 7 tawny day! Confirmed three pairs and one solo. The pairs have moved around a bit, the solo has been in the same tree for a couple of weeks at least.

One Tawny Frogmouth on a branch from a side view with brown and gray mottled feathers, looking down at the ground from the branch of a gum tree. It was probably only 3 metres away from me. I didn’t see it at first. I was taking the photo of the pair and I noticed it move.

Tawny Frogmouth pair snuggled together next to the trunk of a large gum tree on a perpendicular branch draped with stringy bark making it a bit hard to see them. One is looking at me and the larger one on the outer edge of the branch is looking away showing its short beak and feathery nose. Long tail feathers hang down below the branches, shadowed by the stringy bark in front of them. The trunk is gray and cream coloured with lots of brown streamers of bark hanging all around. Blue sky in background.

Saw 6 Tawnys again today. This time a pair and a quad. One was very close!

Attempt at all three Tawny Frogmouths on a very stringy gum tree, hardly visible with background light. Two nestled in the crotch of the upper right branch and the third lower down on the left side of the photo.

Backlit image of two Tawny Frogmouths visibly huddled together just to the right of the trunk of the tree with a fair bit of stringy bark around them.

It was a 6 Tawny day! Only once before have I seen both breeding pairs with adolescent youngins! Photos don’t quite capture their beauty. Nor could I get all 6. Stay tuned for more.

Single Tawny Frogmouth, tail feathers wrapped around the small branch of a large stringy barked gum tree. Short wide beak with yellow intense eyes looking right at you.

Tawny pair, likely mother and young/adolescent. Mother’s tail is more visible below the branch than her face but youngin has its head tilted to get a better view of you looking at it, looking at you. Large branches and a few green gum leaves in front of a blue sky.

Saw all 5 resident Tawny Frogmouths today. Three pictured. The head tilt is the adolescent, hatched a few months ago. Nice to see it’s still around!
