This treaty was born from decades of global civil society activism. Today, we honour those who worked for this milestone, particularly survivors of nuclear violence.

The world deserves nothing less.

Black text on cream and blue background that reads

5 Year Anniversary. Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons Entered into Force.

On 22 January 2021, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the first multilateral treaty to categorically ban nuclear weapons, became international law, prohibiting their development, production, possession, use, and threat of use.

The Treaty also obliges States Parties to provide assistance for victims of nuclear weapons and for environmental remediation.

For the first time in history, nuclear weapons were placed in the same category as chemical and biological weapons: forbidden under international law

This treaty was born from decades of global civil society activism, a recognition that nuclear weapons are inherently immoral, pose catastrophic humanitarian risk, and must have no place in our world.

What happened at Hiroshima? Eighty years ago, the US dropped a nuclear bomb on Japan, the only nuclear weapon ever used in warfare.

A powerful report from the BBC on the impact of the US atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ... though it may serve the UK audience to be honest about British nuclear testing on other countries (Australia, Kiribati, USA) too. #NuclearTruth

2/ Today, it’s a Superfund site. And still, local communities live with the toxic legacy of nuclear colonialism. Later, a visit to the New Mexico Mining Museum revealed shocking radiation readings from a uranium rock. This is what the bomb left behind.
