Pakistan regulator proposes up to 8% cut in gas price Pakistan has reduced the price of natural gas after a review of the revenue requirement of the two public suppliers. In its order issued on Monday, the sector’s regulator, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), said the decision has been made to benefit the consumers. Pakistan’s two gas utility companies, Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) and the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), had submitted an application to review the price based on their revenue estimation for the financial year 2025-26. After hearing the applications, OGRA announced its decision, cutting the gas price by 3% for SNGPL and 8% for SSGC. OGRA said it has “carefully reviewed the revenue requirement” of both companies and determined the price by “optimizing costs as well as revenues”. The average prescribed price for SNGPL has been determined at PKR 1,804.08 per MMBTU and PKR 1,549.41 per MMBTU for SSGC for FY26. The regulator said it has also added to the cost the impact of deferred cargoes in the case of Pakistan LNG Limited. The regulator has sought the federal government's advice on its price determination. “Any revision, as advised by the federal government, shall be accordingly notified by OGRA,” the regulator said, adding that until such decision, the existing prices will remain in effect. The regulator has also adjusted PKR 13 billion for SNGPL and PKR 47.3 billion for SSGCL to adjust the previous shortfall /stock of gas circular debt.

Diesel prices to soar, petrol may dip in Pakistan Pakistan is likely to revise petroleum product prices for the next 15 days, with diesel expected to become significantly costlier while petrol may see a slight reduction, according to industry sources. The government revises the prices of petroleum products every fortnight in line with changes in global oil prices. Currently, the price of petrol is PKR 265.45 per liter and that of high-speed diesel PKR 278.44. According to the industry’s Initial working, prepared in light of global market trends, petrol could become cheaper by PKR 1.96 per liter, while high-speed diesel may increase by PKR 9.60 per liter, the sources said. Kerosene is projected to rise by PKR 8.82 per liter and light diesel oil by PKR 7.15 per liter, they added. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will send its detailed price working to the Petroleum Division on November 15. The Petroleum Division and the Ministry of Finance will then finalize a joint assessment, which will be forwarded to the prime minister for approval. Following the prime minister’s decision, the Ministry of Finance will announce the revised prices, which will come into effect for the next two weeks from November 15. On October 13, Pakistan increased the price of petrol by PKR 2.43 per liter and that of high-speed diesel by PKR 3.02 per liter. Fuel prices in Pakistan are influenced not only by global crude prices but also by the government’s tax structure, particularly the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL). The PDL is a fixed amount per liter levied on petroleum products and is a key source of non-tax revenue for the federal government. As part of commitments made under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, Pakistan has gradually increased the levy on petrol and diesel in recent months. The government can impose a maximum PDL of PKR 90 per liter on petrol and diesel under the Finance Act 2025. At present, the PDL on diesel is around PKR 77 per liter and that on petrol PKR 78 per liter. Even when global oil prices fall, domestic price reductions may be limited if the government chooses to maintain or increase the levy to meet fiscal targets.

OGRA reduces LPG price for domestic consumers ISLAMABAD: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) on Saturday announced a reduction in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), cutting the price by Rs4.62 per kilogram per cylinder effective from May 1, 2025. According to the OGRA notification, the new LPG rate has been set at Rs240.43 per kg. The price for 11.8kg domestic cylinder has been reduced by Rs54.60. The overall price of domestic cylinder has been reduced from Rs2,892 to Rs2,838, the notification said. On the other hand, the price of gold per tola declined by Rs1,400 across the country on Saturday. According to the Sindh Sarafa Bazaar Jewellers’ Association, the latest decrease took the per tola price of gold to Rs347,200. The price of 10 grams of gold also decreased by Rs1,200, reaching Rs297,668. In the international market, gold prices eased earlier after US President Donald Trump set a July 9 deadline for a trade deal with the European Union, rescinding his earlier threat of a 50 per cent tariff from June 1. Spot gold was down 0.3 per cent at $3,346.59 an ounce, as of 0312 GMT. US gold futures fell 0.6 per cent to $3,345.70. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s short-term inflation saw a slight drop in the week ending May 29, with prices falling for key essentials such as electricity, chicken and cooking gas, according to official data released on Friday. The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), which measures weekly price changes in a fixed basket of goods, declined by 0.81 per cent compared to the previous week, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) said. However, on a year-on-year basis, the SPI recorded a modest increase of 0.41 per cent. During the latest week, prices of 14 out of 51 monitored items went up, 10 declined, and 27 remained unchanged. The weekly drop was mainly driven by a sharp 10.10 per cent reduction in electricity charges. Chicken prices also tumbled by 8.51 per cent, while LPG became cheaper by 2.67 per cent. Minor declines were also noted in powdered milk, vegetable ghee, wheat flour, sugar, garlic and a few pulses.
