Cleavage / bedding relationships. #OUGS Severnside trip to Llyn du Bach manganese mines, North Wales with Tom Cotterell, then at the National Museum of Wales. #Strataday
#WaterfallWednesday a stream falls over cliffs of Triassic mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone. St Audrie's Bay, West Quantoxhead, Somerset, England. A place #OUGS often visits for the superb exposures of gentle Alpine folding - yes, the ripples reached this far! Good North Sea oil field analogues

The river tunnels under rock where potholes have linked together
Young potholes in Lower Palaeozoic metamorphic rock
#WaterfallWednesday #Fossbakken Tromsfylke, Norway where the Spanselva river falls and tunnels under rock bridges it has created in a landscape underlain by the Norwegian Caledonian orogeny. #OUGS #NorwegianCaledonides 2011 with MarkAnderson
Folded quartz veins in gneiss in a vertical cutting
The cutting through the Torrox gneiss in an abandoned urbanizacion in Torrox, Andalucia. Complete with street lights

#FridayFold - veins (and pegmatite) in the Torrox gneiss, Andalucia. #OUGS #PresidentsTrip2015 A road cut in an abandoned urbanizacion outside Torrox, Andalucia. See ALT text
From last weekend's #OUGS #Glencoe trip with expert @davemcgarvie.bsky.social
I think Buchaille Etive Mhor could count as a #MondayMountain, or maybe #MountainMonday too
Ignimbrite is a fairly strong, low density, easily worked freestone. Up close you can see the lithic and pumice clasts but it does rather resemble breeze blocks from a distance! Not sure about the pointing though....
The Arico Ignimbrite is one of the few welded ignimbrites - look for the fiamme - clasts flattened while the volcanic tephra were still hot and plastic
Not exactly #urbangeology as some is rural! But it is building stone...
On #OUGS Tenerife trips #VolcanoesOnAShoestring looked at building stone use as a sideline. Here's some ignimbrite, unwelded (L) and welded, uncommon on the island (R). See ALT text for more detail.

The Kvernmo Nappe, in road-side cuttings along the Gratangsbotn road near Storfossen waterfall. High-grade gneiss with plagioclase-rich granite lenses. Minerals present include coarse muscovite, biotite, #garnet, #kyanite, feldspar and quartz. #OUGS #Caledonides #Norway #MineralMonday
The syenite texture with those randomly orientated, thin laths of feldspar reminds me of syenite I've seen on Tenerife and Fuerteventura. #OUGS #VolcanoesOnAShoestring 1990s/2000s/2010s
Syntectonic folding i.e. the older, lower beds have been folded more than the younger, higher, beds. Spanish Pyrenees. Aguero, Aragon. #FridayFold #OUGS #Pyrenees1996
#VolcanoThursday Volcàn de Bayuyo, Fuerteventura, a monogenetic cone that erupted some 10 000 years ago. #OUGS #VolcanoesOnAShoestring 2010s
#FossilFriday a school of sprats! Leptolepis sprattiformis, which are only c. 6 or 7 cm long, on display at the Burgomeister Müller Museum in Eichstatt. Actually more like whitebait than sprats!Plus one surrounded by manganese dendrites. #OUGS trip with @palaeofossil.bsky.social and John Nudds 2019
#WaterfallWednesday a series of weirs just below the source of the Rio Genal at Igualeda in the Serrania de Ronda, Andalucia. The river is sourced from an aquifer and flows out of a cave at the cliff base on the left. #OUGS Mantle in the Mouhtains 2016
We are used to seeing Solnhofen fossils beautifully prepped but this is a lobster one of our #OUGS group found, just as it came out of the rock in the Haardt quarry. 2018 trip. #FossilFriday
#VolcanoThursday penitentes near Teide top teleferico station. Tenerife #VolcanoesOnAShoestring #OUGS
Metamorphosed mafic volcanic rock known as blueschist or glaucophane schist. Contains porphyroblasts of lawsonite (diamond-shaped), indicative of High P/LowT burial, also red, equant garnets.
The view west down the Täschtal towards the Matter valley, from the Saas-Zermatt ophiolite exposure at its upper, eastern end. There are pillow lavas too, and lovely wildflowers :)
#MineralMonday High pressure/low temperature #blueschist (glaucophane) facies metamorphism with lawsonite and garnet porphyroblasts. Zermatt-Saas zone. Täschtal (photo), Valais, Switzerland. #OUGS Alps 2000 with Bill Fitches
Hydrothermally altered Miocene volcanic ashes and breccias on the edge of the Rodalquilar caldera, Las Negras, Almeria, Spain.
#VolcanoThursday #OUGS #VolcanoesOnAShoestring
Eas Mór (the "big waterfall"), Glen Brittle, Skye. #OUGS Severnside trip with Charlie Bendall. This is where the Allt Coire na Banachdich which flows from the Cuillin hills falls over plateau lavas, interspersed with infill conglomerates. #WaterfallWednesday
Long,tube-like Porites fossils in life position, nearly vertical.
Porites patch reefs dominate pinnacle and thicket zones on the patch reef front.
Rambla de Gochar, Almeria, Spain. A series of three prograding Messinian patch #reefs with plenty of big (c 1m) #Porites #coral fossils #OUGS trips 1998/2000/2005/2010. #FossilFriday
The Rhine falls at Schaffhausen, Switzerland, where erosion resistant Jurassic limestone narrows the river channel. #WaterfallWednesday

This weeks's #FridayFold - Triassic mica schist at Hoya de la Mora, Sierra Nevada, Andalucia, Spain. #MantleInTheMountains #OUGS with Tom Argles 2015/2016
Chinyero lies on one (the northwesterly) of three ridges emanating from Teide, Tenerife's central volcano. A single eruption lasting a week or so built up a scoria cone and produced an aa flow.
#VolcanoThursday The most recent eruption on Tenerife: the monogenetic scoria cone of Mta Chinyero (1909). There's been seismic activity on that ridge since, but no more eruptions. #VolcanoesOnAShoestring #OUGS
A path up a steep sided valley leads to a cascade over vertical lava crags. Lush vegetation: trees on the calley sides and hydrangea bushes by the stream.
Can't resist a #WaterfallWednesday with a bit of geology thrown in. This fall in mid-ocean is in Ribeira dos Caldeiros National Park, São Miguel, Açores. Rivers dropping over volcanic rock ledges once turned five watermills here. The volcanically active island grew on the North Azores FZ. #OUGS 2006
#MineralMonday do you like your garnets with strain shadows or without? Some syn-, some post-tectonic, cm-sized porphyroblasts on the same exposure of the Gratangen nappe, Troms, Norway. #OUGS 2011
#MountainMonday south of Lake Tornetrask near Stenbacken, Sweden. Horizontally bedded Cambrian sandstones and shales topped by a cliff formed by a thrust sheet of Precambrian rocks. More Cambrian rocks at the very top of the hill rest unconformably on Precambrian. #OUGS 2011
