Defector’s Favorite Rob Reiner Credits When Rob Reiner was killed earlier this week, along with his wife and creative partner Michelle, the world of film lost one of its most beloved and respected figures, an artist who had done very good and extremely popular work in a variety of genres, first in front of the camera, then behind it as a writer, producer, and director, and then again in his later life as an actor. All the while, Reiner maintained a spotless reputation as a mensch, in an industry with vanishingly few of those. He was one of the most sophisticated and successful political activists in California, and his work (and money) helped pass the state's groundbreaking marriage equality law. Few filmmakers have had as vast or varied an impact on American life over the last 50 years, which is something that Reiner would surely have found very funny. Here are some of Reiner's films and roles that we love: ## **_Stand By Me_**

a woman covering her face with her hand in front of a sign that says ups ALT: a woman covering her face with her hand in front of a sign that says ups

If it’s just a few times or votes were about banal stuff, I cut them some slack. It’s also December, when many ppl get sick.

More important: watch for patterns of absence, overall frequency.

BTW: #January is consistently the month when the most ppl die. (Used to write #obits.)

Dick Cheney Departs The World He Made At its heart, American conservatism is a fantasy. It's a vision of a world too evil to be saved or cared about, and fearsome enough to justify any and every impulse toward cruelty and violence that a person might have. A world resolutely unworthy of knowing, except as a danger. A world in which you will always need a gun, and to shoot somebody with it, instead of just lusting for both. Because the world isn't actually like that—because, in general, people are just people, and mostly want to live peaceably and get along with each other—most American conservatives must mainline Fox News (or Newsmax, or whatever) directly to their brains at all hours in order to remain within the fantasy that both sustains and degrades them. In this respect, Dick Cheney got luckier than most American right-wingers could ever dream. Fanatics with brown skin crashed commercial jet airliners into the World Trade Center and Pentagon, at a time when, as vice president under the harebrained and banally evil George W. Bush, Cheney for all practical purposes ran the most lethal death-dealing apparatus in the history of the world. He got to spend seven years deciding who the bad guys were and how to kill them. He got to scrawl the simplest possible moral calculus across the world in blood. He lived the dream.

Diane Keaton’s Solo Act At the end of _Baby Boom,_ the 1987 film starring Diane Keaton as a career woman who suddenly becomes a mother after "inheriting" a baby, she stands before a board room full of the very men who decided that motherhood was distracting her from her high-flying corporate career. After quitting and building a new, successful company by herself, these men want her back. She rejects their offer by declaring: "I think I'm doing pretty good on my own."_Baby Boom_ would be Keaton's first collaboration with filmmaker Nancy Meyers, who would—starting a few decades later with _Something’s Gotta Give_ —help install the actress as a romantic comedy mainstay. Keaton was so associated with the genre that when she died on Oct. 11 at the age of 79, appreciations and obituaries described her as a kind of rom-com icon. It's an ironic title considering Keaton seemed to spend her life and career saying, over and over again, _I'm good on my own_. In one of her earliest roles, in _The Godfather_ , for which director Francis Ford Coppola hired her because she was already known around town for her eccentricity, Keaton sits rapt with her blonde curls among all those dark-haired Italian Americans, her not-quite-guileless face flattening as Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) tells her about his mafia family. She doesn't fit in that world—neither physically nor temperamentally—and he abandons her when he rises to the top. She's sad about it, she tries to get in touch over and over, but eventually she's fine, really. When Michael does come back to her, he’s the one doing the chasing. In the last scene of the film, Michael takes a meeting as the head of the family and the door closes on Kay, alone, her face holding up the final frame—Coppola knew that Keaton alone could command a room. Years later, she intimated Pacino, with whom she had a relationship off screen, was the one that got away. She thought he would marry her, but wouldn’t go so far as asking him herself. Which is probably for the best, as Keaton wasn't really the marrying kind. She knew that from the start. "I remember in high school," she told _People_ magazine, "this guy came up to me and said, 'One day you're going to make a good wife.' And I thought, 'I don't want to be a wife. No.'"

The Defector D’Angelo Mixtape The music channel in Defector's work Slack is, paradoxically or not, a fairly quiet place. People will talk about records they're enjoying or not enjoying, Patrick will reply "type shit" to various stuff, but for the most part everyone is off listening on their own and on their own time. But when D'Angelo died earlier this week at the age of 51, the channel lit up first with the sad stuff you'd expect, and then with memories of our favorite D'Angelo songs and performances and personal memories—all meaningful in urgent and individuated ways, often very different from one another, all anchored by this one uncanny and brilliant artist. Here is some of that music, and what it means to six of us. * * *

You Couldn’t Drag Bernie Parent Out Of Philadelphia Bernie Parent was already a Flyers legend when he retired from the NHL in 1979. It's the rest of his life that made him a Philadelphia legend. The Hall of Fame goaltender, who won consecutive Stanley Cups with the Flyers in 1974 and '75, died Sunday at age 80. The Montreal native spent a decade with the Flyers, then stuck around the Philadelphia area for the rest of his life; he was a ubiquitous presence at Flyers events, on local TV, at charity auctions, down the shore, et cetera. Shoot a hockey puck anywhere in the Philadelphia area over the last 45 years and you might’ve hit Bernie Parent.
