I had a strange problem where I got scammed and overpaid for my crappy old Wifi card when building my PC years ago.
Up until recently, my solution was to use an old micromax A109 in USB tethering mode. About six months ago, it could not handle the […]

no, you don't need to spent 2 hours figuring why wireguard doesnt work on openwrt, just bring up WAN interface

Upgraded my access point (a openwrt one) to #openwrt 25.12 ( https://openwrt.org/#current_stable_seriesopenwrt_2512 )
No hassles, just worked.
That all went swimmingly! I think it's the easiest #OpenWRT upgrade I've ever done.
Being able to custom-build a sysupgrade with a list of additional packages is really neat! It handled my DNS being on a weird port, and it even maintained my crontab. I lost all the files in my home directory […]

pi-hole.net is indeed a great tool to get rid of ads, malware & other nefarious domains on the whole network!
On my router I run an adblock which takes care of the devices on the LAN.
Setting the rpi as DNS server for the LAN may be hard for some, let alone flashing #openWRT or so to a router. 🤔
Geeky post:
I got annoyed with spectrum obnoxiously low upload speeds. (50 mb in 2026)
So I had to set up a Linux box with proxmox and openwrt to do traffic shaping to avoid bufferfloat issues.
Network is much happier at home.
Southern California needs more fiber internet.

Finally started testing #OpenWRT 25.10 release candidates, and I found a big bug with VLAN setting migration in #25.12-RC5. Submitted the report!

We redesigned the boundary:
• Boot-time capability detection
• Dynamic UCI generation
• Structured AT abstraction
• Normalized signal reporting
The result wasn’t multi-modem support.
It was hardware change becoming a non-event. In long-lived systems, abstraction is risk control.

My unwavering optimism is evident in the fact that I already have the first open-source hardware for the Erich Mühsam Foundation network, without knowing where it will be installed. It is a 6 W firewall from Thomas Krenn and an open-source router from the OpenWRT community. It costs one-hundredth of an Apple device. It really belongs to you, but you need an IQ above 11. Whether that's the case for me remains to be seen, but it's worth a try.

Was trying to get to expand the storage on #OpenWrt.
Was running trouble formatting the USB (not enough space on router).
Had the realization that I could just do the formatting on a Linux VM, and formatting and the rest of the configuration on the Router itself.

It's why I'm a massive fan of #openwrt.
It takes what should be an end of life wireless access point, switch, or router and, if it has support, lets you install software that turns it into a WAY more useful and long-life device.
This also makes it a rather nice educational tool as well!
