Outfest Film Festival is Returning to Los Angeles A beloved film festival is returning to the City of Angels. Following a two-year hiatus, LGBTQ+ entertainment industry nonprofit Outfest announced this morning in a _press release_ that a new iteration of their LGBTQ+ film festival, OutfestNEXT, will take place from Nov. 6 through 9 in Los Angeles. The event, which is currently in the final stages of planning, will be produced in partnership with HBO Max and feature a celebration of the community it uplifts. ### “Outfest has a new Board of Directors with new, vibrant voices representing the arts and entertainment communities,” said Board President Lucas Bailey in an embedded statement. ‘We are committed to rebuilding in the face of current headwinds facing the arts, QTBIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities.” ### > See on Instagram ### Initially created at UCLA in 1982, the organization supports the LGBTQ+ community within the entertainment industry through its programming meant to highlight and showcase films by queer actors and filmmakers. Previous selections highlighted through Outfest programming include Jane Schoenbrun’s debut feature film _We’re All Going to the World’s Fair_ in 2021, and the film adaptation of _Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe_ in 2023. Outfest has also been a part of the North American Queer Festival Alliance since its inception in 2020, an organization established in partnership with Frameline, Inside Out and Newfest to further protect and promote the works of marginalized filmmakers. ### In a 2023 statement, the festival cited the current financial climate within the media and entertainment industries as rationale for scaling back their staff, postponing their annual Legacy Awards ceremony and other initiatives to accommodate for internal restructuring. Today’s press release from the organization notes the return of many employees from its programming, development, communications, and operations departments. It also noted an intention to reestablish key initiatives such as its traditional film festival initiative, Outfest Los Angeles, as well as its BIPOC-oriented film program, Outfest Fusion. ### Given the hiatus’ occurrence amidst industry unionization and strikes, it’s also worth noting that Outfest’s return is endorsed by Queer Filmmakers United, the union connected to the organization’s staff. “We are greatly encouraged by [Outfest’s] commitment to fostering a mutually respectful workplace, as demonstrated by their voluntary recognition of our union,” Current QFU president Daniel Crooke said. ### _Eleanor Jacobs is PAPER's 2025 Fall Intern_ _Image via Getty_

Outfest returns: Here's what to know about new 4-day event OutfestNEXT Outfest is returning with a bang. After a two-year hiatus, the Los Angeles LGBTQ+ film festival has partnered with HBO Max for a four-day screening event and celebration named OutfestNEXT. > **Sign up for the _Out_ Newsletter to keep up with what's new in LGBTQ+ culture and entertainment — delivered three times a week straight (well…) to your inbox!** The L.A.-based nonprofit, which aims to support LGBTQ+ storytellers in the entertainment industry from a local level to a global audience, announced today the "election of a new Board of Directors" and the "rehiring of key staff members" to assist the festival's return. This big comeback will be presented as OutfestNEXT, a four-day screening event taking place on November 6-9 with new programming initiatives. Christopher Racster, Interim Executive Director of Outfest, writes in a statement: > "Outfest was born of the need for our LGBTQ+ community to have a place to safely gather and to support filmmakers who were telling authentic stories. Outfest is being reborn at a time when telling our stories has never been more important. We are re-emerging to ensure that our community is not being erased by those working to deny us equal and civil rights. We are proud and grateful to have our decades long partner HBO Max returning as Presenting Sponsor for the event. Now more than ever, our community needs to come together, and our voices need to be heard." Outfest has also announced the "rehiring of staff in the programming, development, communications, and operations departments." Additionally, the festival will continue to rehire other key roles as Outfest plans to relaunch its signature programs in 2026, such as Outfest Los Angeles (celebrated LGBTQ+ film festival) and Outfest Fusion (BIPOC-focused film program). Within this restaffing initiative, Outfest will collaborate with the Queer Filmworkers United union to ensure that team members are supported by the union's guidance. "What an extraordinary moment for the queer and film communities in Los Angeles. We at Queer Filmworkers United are excited by the fresh approach taken by Christopher and the new Board of Directors in bringing our beloved organization back to life," QFU's Daniel Crooke wrote in a statement. "We are greatly encouraged by their commitment to fostering a mutually respectful workplace, as demonstrated by their voluntary recognition of our union." Lucas Bailey, Outfest's new President of the Board of Directors, also wrote in a statement: > "In addition to the rehiring of key staff members, Outfest has also elected a new Board of Directors, filling key board leadership roles with new, vibrant voices representing a cross-section of the arts and entertainment communities. We are humbled to be standing on the shoulders of those who have spent four decades building Outfest. We are committed to rebuilding in the face of the current headwinds facing the arts, QTBIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. We are inspired by the knowledge that our community has overcome countless obstacles in the past by standing together." **Stay tuned for more updates about the organization and its upcoming programming events atOutfest.org.**

Both. I could not follow the storyline or characters - editing?. I remember when certain subcultures were obsessed with using the N-word. It is sad in this context. #Outfest

philly #outfest really knows how to respect the locals. they've blocked off my whole neighborhood, but in return, they put the mozzarella sticks stand right outside my front door. that's a win.
