When the San Francisco 49ers hired Katie Sowers in 2017, she became the organization's first ever female assistant coach, and the 2nd full-time female assistant coach in NFL history. She also became the NFL's first openly gay coach. In 2019, she became the first female member of an NFL staff to coach in a Super Bowl. She called the experience "surreal" — "even though I'm the first, the most important thing is I'm not the last and we continue to grow it."
In the 2019 season, Katie Sowers became the first female member of an NFL staff to coach in a Super Bowl, coaching for the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.
