Great stuff! Helpful guide for new #SciComm users and current users alike.
Thanks for the nod to #PaddlefishNetting!
Beautiful day for #PaddlefishNetting
Another brisk but fair morning deployment for #PaddlefishNetting on Lake Eufaula.
After a 7 yr hiatus from paddlefish netting, we got Nate out of retirement to help us this week. He’s now our boating access coordinator.
More #PaddlefishNetting today on Eufaula Lake. We’re spending 4 days each on the Gaines Creek and Deep Fork arms of this giant reservoir. This is a #restoration stock, so our assessment is ongoing. Catches from the last few years indicate we have some natural #recruitment. 👍
Snow covered boat on a trailer.
Snow covered boat emblazoned with large letters “Fisheries Research”
All the contents of the boat are covered in snow and ice after the multi-hour trek home through a winter storm.
Made it home and only went in the ditch once. No harm done. Another week of #PaddlefishNetting is in the books. Thanks for following. 😎
By the time we finished, visibility was pretty tough with fog and blowing snow/sleet. #PaddlefishNetting
Pretty sure that’s me working up a fish while Caleb, Jacob, and Waylon retrieve the net.
Fellow biologist Chris piloted the boat and recorded data while we retrieved the net and worked up fish.
Just a normal day of Oklahoma #PaddlefishNetting
We were pleased to have another set of hands on the #PaddlefishNetting boat today so we could hustle and get done before the storm got too bad. Jacob is our Fishing R3 Coordinator (Recruitment, Retention, and Reactivation). He had a blast.

Good morning from our final day of #PaddlefishNetting on RS Kerr Lake, Arkansas River, Oklahoma. Warmer today at 25 deg F with calm seas. We’re racing the clock today, as winter storms are approaching.
Nets are soaking for #PaddlefishNetting on Kerr. A bit breezy and cold today, but the sun is out and we have a few nets not catching as much wind. Hoping for a good catch.

But today, our crew boated two monster #paddlefish 38.3 kg (84 lbs) and 47.7 kg (105 lbs).

This is what kids these days are calling the “drip”, right? #PaddlefishNetting

#PaddlefishNetting returned *yesterday*! But it was one of those nightmare days, so few if any pics were taken and we were on the struggle bus. Wind, waves, and sub-freezing temps were not fun.
This week we’re on RS Kerr Lake (Arkansas River).
That does it for this round. Thanks for joining us. Hope to see you when we return for #PaddlefishNetting on Jan 6, 2025
I’m holding a 56” long longnose gar that we caught in our paddlefish net.
First #gar of the season for us and we barely made it in time to post it for #garweek
This longnose was 56” long and 24lbs. Unit.

More wind today, but we closed out this phase of #PaddlefishNetting. We will resume after a holiday break. Here’s a few highlights from today…
Last day of #PaddlefishNetting on Grand Lake. Day 8 of our sample, totaling 96 nets. 😳
Colder morning, but calm at the moment. 👍
Looking forward to good catches followed by a 2 week break.

Picture is the side and tail of a flathead catfish with a semi circular bike mark also from a flathead catfish
18 years ago, I observed bite marks from a flathead catfish (nonnative predator) on an endangered razorback sucker in the lower Colorado R. This week- same, but on a flathead in Grand Lake, OK. #PaddlefishNetting
Caleb deploys a net in the upper reach of Grand Lake as the full moon remains overhead.
BRISK morning deployment on Grand Lake for #PaddlefishNetting 🥶
North winds brought the cold air and challenged our skills. But up in the upper section, we deployed by moonlight.
Warm enough this morning that Caleb shed his coat. #PaddlefishNetting

Nice sunrise with calm waters on Grand Lake.

Looks like raccoon tracks in our live well.
When I arrived at the boats this morning for #PaddlefishNetting, something looked amiss. 🤔
Looks like a bunch of footprints. 👣
Understandable that a critter would investigate our fishy equipment. Later we found a small, half eaten catfish that had wriggled into our stack of anchors yesterday. 😬
Sam and Jackson retrieve the net while Caleb awaits a paddlefish

Third week of #PaddlefishNetting and it’s our second week on Grand Lake. Today we have Sam and Jackson on the boat with us from Missouri State Univ.
Thanks for following us #PaddlefishNetting this week. We’ll be back again on Grand Lake next week for more hot #paddlefish action. See you then.
Jeremy and Erika deploy a gill net off the bow of the boat
An odd injury to the rostrum of a paddlefish.
Erika and Kamdyn were the heroes today. They pulled all six nets while Jeremy and I worked up fish and recorded data.
Belated Friday update for #PaddlefishNetting. We had a busy busy week and are ready for rest. Rain today made it a bit tougher, but the catch was lighter. Lake was glassy this morning and the wind wasn’t as gusty as forecast. 👍
Blistering day today with decent catches and 4’ waves. Will post a report as soon as I can. #PaddlefishNetting
Two paddlefish netting boats waiting in boat slips while loaded with 12 nets, buoys, and anchors for today’s adventures.
Some unidentified knot was used to secure my netting boat to the dock. Easy work is made more difficult with resistance to learning the proper methods.
Warmer start today for #PaddlefishNetting on Grand Lake. It’s a nice benefit when we can borrow boat slips for the week and we’re not commuting with trailers in the dark and launching. But I need to do some crew re-training on knots. 🤦♂️
Pictured is the deck of our 24’ boat with six 44gal trash cans full of net and a bunch of buoys and anchors.
Week 2, Day 2 of #PaddlefishNetting and we’re about to head out. Brisk morning below freezing, but the lake is a bit warmer. 👍
Crowded boat with 6 giant nets and all the buoys, anchors.
#PaddlefishNetting returns.
We’re on big water this week netting Grand Lake in NE OK. Blue ribbon stock. We have 12 nets out and our crew of 8 is looking forward to catching some fish. #shorthanded
