Post: Teresa Lewis became the first woman to join the Black Panther Party in the spring of nineteen sixty seven. A sixteen year old student at Oakland Technical High School, Lewis was already politically active when she joined the party, and accomplished artists for illustrations appeared in some of the earliest issues of the Black Panther. Other women began to join the Panthers and early nineteen Sixty seven, undergoing a training regimen that included political education classes and weapons handling. Like the young men who were drawn to the Black Panthers, these young women were determined to take a stand against violent impression. The role of women in the Black Panthers was not always phase one of full acceptance or equality, especially not in the beginning. Early on, female members of the party were referred to as Panther Reds, treated as an affiliate organization and subjected to harassment. For many women in the Black Panthers, the fight was not just about like, just not for black liberation, but for women's liberation as well. Although the popular image of the Black Panthers is hyper masculine, by nineteen Sixty nine, it was estimated that more than half of rank and file members were women, though only a small handful of women have held leadership roles. But with increasing acts of repression by law enforcement, leading men like Huey Newton in jail and others dead. The role of women in the party began to change out of necessity. Kathleen Cleaver was the first woman to be a part of the Central Committee. Erica Huggins would be the first woman to lead the chapter of Black Panther. Janina Apron took over as editor of the Black Panther for the better part of a decade. Interest, reputation for violence grew in acts of repression by law enforcement.
