電動航空機は、電力の関係上実用化が困難ではあるが、空を飛ぶための浮力をヘリウムに頼る飛行船は、動力を使用するのは基本的に推進装置であるため、電動モーターを使った航空機も可能である。
ただし、試験船である"Pathfinder1"は、内部に内燃機関と発電機を搭載し、その電力でモーターを回している為、完全な電動航空機という訳ではない。

現在、アメリカ西海岸で開発中の硬式飛行船"Pathfinder 1"の、今年5月に実施された試験飛行の映像が公式から公開された。
これ自体は試験船ではあるが、全長124mという大きさは、世界最大の航空機といえるものである。
加えて、この飛行船は、1936年以来絶えて久しい硬式飛行船が90年ぶりに蘇った姿である。
将来的には電気推進、貨物輸送への利用が見込まれているが、開発自体はゆっくりとしたものなので、実用化・商用化まではしばらく時間がかかるだろう。

本邦では観光用気球が中止になる一方、海の向こうのアメリカでは、現在開発中の硬式飛行船（！！）Pathfinder-1が、どうも二か月前に飛行試験を行っていたらしい。
同日の飛行かは不明だが、動画はこちら。
プッシャー式なのかとか、着陸の際にもプロペラを下に向けて降下していることなど、大変興味深い。回転方向を変えられるのだろうか？
