All this talk of endosperm applies only to Flowering Plants (Angiosperms), which have triploid endosperm. Gymnosperms, like pines, cycads, & junipers, do NOT have endosperm. In their seeds, the nutritive storage tissue is the female gametophyte, which is haploid. #seed #Pinaceae #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Pinus banksiana cones are strongly serotinous in populations in the center of the species’ range, but less so at the edges of its range (where fires are less frequent). It's a bet-hedging strategy to ensure seedling establishment. πŸ“·: Taylor Justason CCBYNC4. #Pinaceae #serotiny #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Pinus radiata releases seeds when the temperature goes above 45Β°C (113Β°F). Sometimes that threshold temperature can be reached by passive solar heating of the cones if they are exposed to sunlight on the tree or on the ground. They can open even without fire. #Pinaceae #serotiny #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Serotiny means that the seeds are stored on the mother plant, that they are retained 1+ yr (up to 10+ yr), & that high temp. (usually from fire) is involved in the release of the seeds. πŸ“·: Pinus pinaster. Note 2 generations of seed cones on the shoot. #Pinaceae #serotiny #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Serotiny is the storage of seeds in close cones or fruits, trapping the seeds & preventing dispersal until the cones are heated (usually by fire). Post-fire conditions are ideal for germinating seedlings. These are cones of Pinus clausa of the SE USA. #Pinaceae #serotiny #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Larch is turning gold on the high elevation slopes! So cool that a member of the Pinaceae family changes in the fall.

Naval stores were the economic foundation of North Carolina. Pine resin sealed & waterproofed ships, so tons were collected. Resin collectors inspired the state’s nickname: The Tarheel State. πŸ“·: Resin collectors, H.H. Brimley Collection, State Archives of NC. #Pinaceae #resin #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

It’s resin week! Let’s get stuck in. Resins are complex, viscous mixtures of organic compounds, including terpenes, phenolics & alcohols. They are found throughout the Plant Kingdom, most notably in conifers. πŸ“·: Pinus taeda. #Pinaceae #resin #Botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

Photo (2018) of large bonsai plant "European Larch" on display in a large oval brown pot on a wooden table at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens outdoor bonsai display, University of Michigan.
Looks like an actual tree with pine clusters branching out from four "trunks". The base is covered in moss.

The cones of some confers remain closed, trapping the seeds & preventing dispersal, until the cones are licked by fire. This is called serotony. Post-fire conditions are ideal for the establishment of germinating seedlings. These are the cones of Pinus clausa. #Pinaceae #dispersal #botany 🌾πŸ§ͺ🌱

It's pollen season in North Carolina. This is mostly Pinus pollen, but red oaks are doing their part too. And sweetgum. The image is an actual photo from inside my lungs. 🀧 #Pinaceae #allergy #pollen

I no longer live in #Florida, but my heart will always be in the Scrub. This xeric habitat occurs on ancient dunes, like the Lake Wales & Atlantic Coastal Ridges. The canopy is usually Sand Pine (Pinus clausa; #Pinaceae), & the sterile white sand looks like snow. #scrub #Botany #PlantScience 🌾πŸ§ͺ
