Speaker at Utah Eagle Forum says federal transgender bill would prompt litigation; defends state ban A U.S. representative told an Eagle Forum audience he opposed a federal bill by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene that he said would not protect children and would be rapidly litigated; he defended a three-year state ban he helped pass and warned courts could be asked to redefine 'men and women.'

A U.S. representative warns that a federal bill aimed at penalizing doctors for providing gender-transition procedures to minors could lead to legal chaos and ultimately fail to protect children.

Committee backs bill to set four‑year parole‑board terms and permit two‑member panels Representative Daniel Elliott introduced HB 529 to set four‑year terms for parole board members, allow a governor’s one‑year extension to avoid clustered expirations, permit two‑member panels to decide cases, and keep a two‑thirds vote of the full board when a referred matter is denied; the committee adopted the substitute and title amendment and will report the bill favorably.

A new bill in Kentucky aims to streamline the Parole Board's decision-making process by establishing four-year terms and allowing two-member panels for hearings.

Lets Rethink Housing: Surely we can do something now? Without new laws? Lets Rethink Housing: Surely we can do something now? Without new laws? So let’s imagine this has gone well. We’ve got a solid idea. We’ve persuaded a government to back it. The legislation is being drafted. The machinery is grinding into life. Which means — realistically — we’re waiting. Not months. Years. And while all that process is happening, another question naturally pops up: Is there anything we could start doing now, using the laws and powers we already have?

Lets Rethink Housing: Surely we can do something now? Without new laws?
Say we’ve agreed on a better housing system.

The laws are coming.
The machinery is spinning up.

But while we’re waiting…
surely we can start doing something?

Committee advances two resolutions to change session timing and remove 'germaneness' rule The committee recommended 'do pass' on HJR6 (proposing two 45‑day sessions and other changes) and HJR7 (keeping 60/30 but removing germaneness). Supporters said the measures increase legislative control; opponents warned of rushed work and costs for citizen legislators.

New Mexico lawmakers are debating radical changes to their legislative sessions that could reshape how they set their agenda—will this lead to better governance or chaos?

Lets Rethink Policy-Making: What All of This Was Really About This post brings together the themes explored across the series — punishment, incentives, unintended consequences, and cost — to reflect on what policy does once it becomes a system. It asks how evidence can sit alongside values to design laws that work better in the real world.

Across drugs, sex work, migration, and punishment, the same pattern kept repeating.

This post steps back to ask what all of that was really about — and what happens when morality and evidence drift apart in policy-making.

Lets Rethink Policy-Making: Illegal Drugs – Cost of Losing the War. Has the War on Drugs delivered what it promised? Looking at fifty years of UK policy, this post explores drug use, harm, and public cost — not to win an argument, but to ask whether “being tough” turned out to be an especially expensive way of managing a persistent human behaviour.

Did the War on Drugs work the way we hoped?

A calm, evidence-led look at fifty years of UK policy, persistent behaviour, and the costs of trying to legislate reality away.

Lets Rethink Policy-Making: Illegal Drugs – A cheaper alternative. Let’s Rethink Policy-Making: Filthy Lucre What happens if we stop pretending the illegal drugs market will disappear? Using conservative figures for England & Wales, this post explores how costs, criminal profits, regulation, and incentives interact — and why redesigning where money flows may matter more than repeating moral arguments.

We spend ~£20bn a year dealing with the consequences of illegal drugs in England & Wales — while ~ £10bn flows to criminal markets.

Lets Rethink Policy-Making: Illegal Drugs – Who’s Been Getting Rich. Let’s Rethink Policy-Making: The Filthy Lucre. What happens when the public cost of managing illegal drugs is larger than the market itself? Looking at England & Wales data, we explore why drug use persists, how costs accumulate across health, crime and social services, and why pretending demand can be driven to zero may be one of the most expensive policy assumptions we make.

We spend roughly £20bn a year dealing with the consequences of illegal drugs in England & Wales — while the market itself is worth around £10bn.

This isn’t a moral argument. It’s an accounting one.

Lets Rethink Policy-Making: what Happened Elsewhere? Ok — so before we go any further, it’s probably worth asking a fair question. Is this just how things work everywhere? Or is there something particularly British — or English — about the way we’ve handled it? Up to now, we’ve mostly been looking at the UK. That’s deliberate. It’s the system we live in, pay for, and argue about. But it also risks leaving us with a blind spot. So now feels like the right moment to widen the lens. Let’s have a look at what’s happened elsewhere — maybe we find good examples, maybe someone has cracked it — or maybe different choices just led to different kinds of mess. Because if everyone ended up in the same place, we might just be looking at an unavoidable problem. But if some countries ended up doing noticeably better — or noticeably worse — then what we’re really looking at is design.

Is this really inevitable — or just how we chose to design it?

Comparing UK policy with international approaches to drugs, sex work, and migration, and what different assumptions produce in practice.

Lets Rethink Policy-Making: Migration and Trafficking Migration and trafficking are often treated as moral or enforcement failures, but evidence suggests they are shaped by incentives and policy design. This post explores how restrictive migration systems create shadow markets, increase exploitation, and shift costs elsewhere rather than reducing movement or harm.

When legal routes close, movement doesn’t stop — it adapts.

This post looks at how restrictive migration policy creates shadow systems, empowers traffickers, and increases exploitation instead of reducing it.
