"Congress built the CFPB, and no one other than Congress—not the president, not Musk, not Vought—can shut it down."</p> <p>Trump, Musk, and other powerful CEOs want the CFPB shut down, Warren said, because "this little agency has forced giant banks and corporations to give back more than $21 billion directly to families they cheated."</p> <p>In a statement, government watchdog Accountable.US <a href="https://accountable.us/trumps-cfpb-shutdown-is-a-gift-to-big-banks-a-nightmare-for-the-american-people/" target="_blank">said</a> the attack on the agency is "a direct gut punch to American consumers, and a long-awaited gift to big banks that have been lobbying against the CFPB since before it was established by the landmark law to protect consumers in the wake of the 2007–08 Great Recession. It pauses ongoing investigations into cases of fraud and predatory practices by banks that rip off American consumers."</p> <p>The group also noted that attempts to shut down a bureau that has directly financially benefited working families and held Wall Street accountable is just the latest evidence that, despite the populist tone he struck during his campaign, Trump is breaking his promises "to lower costs and protect American consumers."</p> <p>Accountable.US also pointed to the $3,900 more the typical U.S. family would pay in taxes under Trump's tax plan and the executive action the president rescinded that was aimed at lowering prescription drug costs.</p> <p>"Attacking the CFPB is the latest reminder that Trump's Washington will always put the interests of big banks, corporations, and his billionaire donors ahead of the American people," said Accountable.US executive director Tony Carrk. "In its more than a decade as an agency, the CFPB has put billions of dollars back into the pockets of American families and held big banks accountable for predatory practices that scam consumers and raise their costs. Gutting the agency all but confirms that Trump and Musk are reimagining the government to service themselves at the expense of Americans—who will without a doubt see their costs rise as a result of these efforts."</p> <p>While DOGE has swept through the offices of numerous government agencies in recent weeks, claiming it's cutting costs for American taxpayers and improving efficiency, organizer Leah Greenberg <a href="https://indivisible.org/statements/indivisible-cfpb-stop-work-order-direct-attack-regular-people-and-their-money" target="_blank">said</a> the attack on CFPB and other agencies "isn't about saving money."</p> <p>"It's about making it easier for the ultrarich to keep scamming the rest of us, unchecked and unchallenged," said Greenberg, co-founder of the progressive advocacy group Indivisible. "And let's not forget: Musk isn't just any billionaire throwing his weight around—he has clear conflicts of interest with massive financial stakes in industries regulated by the very agencies he's trying to dismantle."</p> <p>Warren said Democratic lawmakers "will not let up in Congress or the courts until we win this fight."</p> <p>"There is power in fighting back," said the senator, "so please call your representative and most of all, get the word out. We are here to fight for the little agency that fights for us."</p> <p>===</p> <p>Julia Conley is a staff writer for Common Dreams.</p> </div> <div> <span class="hidden"><a href="https://brid.gy/publish/twitter"></a></span><span class="hidden"><a href="https://brid.gy/publish/mastodon"></a></span><span class="hidden"><a href="https://brid.gy/publish/bluesky"></a></span><div class="node_view"></div> </div> <div class="tags"> <ul class="tags"> <li class="h-category"><a href="https://portside.org/consumer-financial-protestion-bureau-elizabeth-warren" hreflang="en">Consumer Financial Protestion Bureau; Elizabeth Warren;</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="buttons-article-end"> <div class="subscribe-article-end"> <a class="btn btn-primary" href="https://portside.org/subscribe">Subscribe to Portside</a> </div> </div>

USDA Inspector General Who Refused To Leave Post Escorted From Office by Security Was Investigating Elon Musk <div class="expanded-article-image-wrapper"> <img alt="" class="expanded-article-image u-photo img-responsive" height="408" loading="lazy" src="https://portside.org/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/field/image/Trump_Protect_Our_Food2.jpg" width="615"/> <div class="article-image-credit"> Donald Trump appears in front of a banner that reads 'Protect Our Food' during a campaign appearance at a farm, Sept. 23, 2024, in Smithton, Pa. (AP Photo // Gizmondo), </div> </div> <div class="full-article-text-wrapper"> <p>Last Friday, President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/27/us/politics/trump-inspectors-general-fired.html">purged several agencies of their inspectors general</a>, demanding that at least 17 people in the role immediately turn in their work laptops and ID badges. One of those IGs, Phyllis Fong at the US Department of Agriculture, decided not to leave, believing the order to be illegal. According to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/usda-inspector-general-escorted-out-her-office-after-defying-white-house-2025-01-29/">report from Reuters</a>, she was escorted from the building today by security.</p> <p>Fong is a 22-year veteran of the inspector general office with the USDA. And while that multi-decade career is probably in part why the Trump administration axed her (something something swamp, something something career bureaucrat, etc.), she also likely carried among the most institutional knowledge of IG operations in the federal government. In 2008, <a href="https://usdaoig.oversight.gov/about/inspector-general-biography">she was named</a> the first Chairperson of the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) and sat on the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board that oversaw federal spending related to disaster relief. Per her <a href="https://usdaoig.oversight.gov/about/inspector-general-biography">biography on the USDA website</a>, she was also the recipient of “numerous awards in recognition of her leadership in enhancing sound financial management practices and policies in the Federal Government.”</p> <p>Seems like the kind of person that you’d want around if your whole thing is eliminating wasteful spending and inefficient operations. Of course, perhaps there is some other reason that you’d want to sack a person who is an expert in your stated goals. Maybe, just for instance, she was <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/musks-neuralink-faces-federal-probe-employee-backlash-over-animal-tests-2022-12-05/">heading up an investigation into Neuralink</a>, a company run by Elon Musk that is seeking to implant chips into peoples’ brains. Then maybe you’d fire her as retribution—hypothetically speaking, that is.</p> <div class="links inline social-buttons-links tokens" id="block-socialsimpleblock"> <div class="social-buttons"> <div class="social-buttons-title">Share this article on</div> <ul class="links"> <li class="twitter"><a data-placement="top" data-popup-height="300" data-popup-width="600" data-toggle="tooltip" href="https://twitter.com/intent/tweet/?url=https%3A//portside.org/2025-01-30/usda-inspector-general-who-refused-leave-post-escorted-office-security-was-investigating&amp;text=USDA%20Inspector%20General%20Who%20Refused%20To%20Leave%20Post%20Escorted%20From%20Office%20by%20Security%20Was%20Investigating%20Elon%20Musk" title="Twitter"><i class="fa fa-twitter"></i><span class="visually-hidden">Twitter</span></a></li> <li class="facebook"><a data-placement="top" data-popup-height="300" data-popup-width="600" data-toggle="tooltip" href="https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A//portside.org/2025-01-30/usda-inspector-general-who-refused-leave-post-escorted-office-security-was-investigating" title="Facebook"><i class="fa fa-facebook"></i><span class="visually-hidden">Facebook</span></a></li> <li class="mail"><a data-popup-open="false" href="mailto:?body=%0AUSDA%20Inspector%20General%20Who%20Refused%20To%20Leave%20Post%20Escorted%20From%20Office%20by%20Security%20Was%20Investigating%20Elon%20Musk%0Ahttps%3A//portside.org/2025-01-30/usda-inspector-general-who-refused-leave-post-escorted-office-security-was-investigating&amp;subject=USDA%20Inspector%20General%20Who%20Refused%20To%20Leave%20Post%20Escorted%20From%20Office%20by%20Security%20Was%20Investigating%20Elon%20Musk" title="Mail"><i class="fa fa-envelope"></i><span class="visually-hidden">Mail</span></a></li> </ul> </div> </div> <p>Regardless of why Fong and some of her colleagues were fired, her position that the axings were illegal seems like it may hold weight. CIGIE responded to the firings by stating they appeared to violate federal law, with chairman Hannibal Ware <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/01/25/donald-trump-inspectors-general-firing-00200611?is_magic_link=true&amp;template_id=OTJIR2CRKUD6&amp;template_variant_id=OTV1GDUJ5B1ZS">writing</a> in a letter to the White House that “At this point, we do not believe the actions taken are legally sufficient to dismiss Presidentially Appointed, Senate Confirmed Inspectors General.” Senator Adam Schiff has also <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jan/27/trump-federal-government-watchdogs-adam-schiff">explicitly called the firings illegal</a>. Even Republican Senator Chuck Grassley put out a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-fires-least-12-independent-inspectors-general-washington-post-reports-2025-01-25/">statement</a> urging the Trump administration to explain the firings and why there was no 30-day notice as required under the law.</p> <p>Will any of them actually do something about it, though? Thus far, the Democrats have proven feckless in the face of Trump’s shock and awe campaign. When confusion over a Trump executive order seemed to lead to Medicaid portals becoming inaccessible across the country, Dem leadership announced an <a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/01/28/democrats-jeffries-trump-funding-freeze-omb">emergency meeting</a>…for the next day.</p> <p>Maybe they’ll get around to trying to reinstate the USDA’s inspector general next week if they have time. It’s not like the agency is currently <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/bird-flu/situation-summary/data-map-commercial.html">monitoring a bird flu outbreak</a> at the moment or anything. No rush!</p> <p></p><div class="snapshot-mini-form tokens" data-drupal-selector="snapshot-mini-form" id="block-portsidelistservnewslettersubscribeminiform"> <form accept-charset="UTF-8" action="#snapshot-mini-form" class="form-horizontal" id="snapshot-mini-form" method="post"> <p class="helper-text">If you like this article, please sign up for Snapshot, Portside's daily summary.</p><div class="subscribe-oneline"><div class="row form-group js-form-item form-item js-form-type-email form-type-email js-form-item-email-address form-item-email-address"> <label class="col-sm-2 control-label js-form-required form-required" for="edit-email-address">Email</label> <div class="form--email col-sm-10 col-lg-8"> <input aria-required="true" class="form-email required form-control input--text" data-drupal-selector="edit-email-address" id="edit-email-address" maxlength="64" name="email_address" required="required" size="64" type="email" value=""/> </div> </div> <div class="form-group"> <input class="btn-wide button js-form-submit form-submit btn-portside" data-drupal-selector="edit-submit" id="edit-submit" name="op" type="submit" value="Subscribe"/> </div> </div><input class="form-control input--text" data-drupal-selector="edit-list-name" name="list_name" type="hidden" value="PORTSIDE-SNAPSHOT"/> <p class="helper-text">(One summary e-mail a day, you can <a href="https://portside.org/subscribe">change anytime</a>, and Portside is always free.)</p><input class="form-control input--text" data-drupal-selector="edit-honeypot-time" name="honeypot_time" type="hidden" value="jpEGecFJpTmdjEgiWCKHv3dMomojhrrnSl9f6562IHs"/> <input autocomplete="off" class="form-control input--text" data-drupal-selector="form-mv-la0jvqnhjhzpwfe9gafbob8udrecwdidkw0-msaq" name="form_build_id" type="hidden" value="form-mV_La0JVQnhJHZPwfe9GafbOb8uDREcwDIdKW0-mSAQ"/> <input class="form-control input--text" data-drupal-selector="edit-snapshot-mini-form" name="form_id" type="hidden" value="snapshot_mini_form"/> <div class="zip-textfield js-form-wrapper form-wrapper" style="display: none !important;"><div class="row form-group js-form-item form-item js-form-type-textfield form-type-textfield js-form-item-zip form-item-zip"> <label class="col-sm-2 control-label" for="edit-zip">Leave this field blank</label> <div class="form--textfield col-sm-10 col-lg-8"> <input autocomplete="off" class="form-text form-control input--text" data-drupal-selector="edit-zip" id="edit-zip" maxlength="128" name="zip" size="20" type="text" value=""/> </div> </div> </div> </form> </div> </div> <div> <span class="hidden"><a href="https://brid.gy/publish/twitter"></a></span><span class="hidden"><a href="https://brid.gy/publish/mastodon"></a></span><span class="hidden"><a href="https://brid.gy/publish/bluesky"></a></span><div class="node_view"></div> </div> <div class="tags"> <ul class="tags"> <li class="h-category"><a href="https://portside.org/inspectors-general" hreflang="en">Inspectors General</a></li> <li class="h-category"><a href="https://portside.org/donald-trump" hreflang="en">Donald Trump</a></li> <li class="h-category"><a href="https://portside.org/trump-20" hreflang="en">Trump 2.0</a></li> <li class="h-category"><a href="https://portside.org/resistance-20" hreflang="en">Resistance 2.0</a></li> <li class="h-category"><a href="https://portside.org/elon-musk" hreflang="en">Elon Musk</a></li> <li class="h-category"><a href="https://portside.org/united-states-department-agriculture" hreflang="en">United States Department of Agriculture</a></li> <li class="h-category"><a href="https://portside.org/usda" hreflang="en">USDA</a></li> <li class="h-category"><a href="https://portside.org/council-inspectors-general-integrity-and-efficiency" hreflang="en">Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency</a></li> <li class="h-category"><a href="https://portside.org/phyllis-fong" hreflang="en">Phyllis Fong</a></li> <li class="h-category"><a href="https://portside.org/neuralink" hreflang="en">Neuralink</a></li> <li class="h-category"><a href="https://portside.org/trump-administration" hreflang="en">Trump Administration</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="buttons-article-end"> <div class="subscribe-article-end"> <a class="btn btn-primary" href="https://portside.org/subscribe">Subscribe to Portside</a> </div> </div>

Trump’s “Buyout” Offer for Federal Workers Is Already Backfiring <div class="expanded-article-image-wrapper"> <img alt="" class="expanded-article-image u-photo img-responsive" height="410" loading="lazy" src="https://portside.org/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/field/image/backfire.jpg" width="615"/> <div class="article-image-credit"> (Wikimedia Commons) </div> </div> <div class="full-article-text-wrapper"> <p>Trump’s ultimatum to federal workers is backfiring—making them vow to stay in their positions out of sheer spite. </p> <p>On Tuesday, the president <a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/01/28/trump-federal-workers-quit-severance" target="_blank">announced</a> that he’d be giving federal workers a choice: return to the office full-time or quit with a buyout and severance pay through September 30. This is part of his effort to revamp the federal bureaucracy in his own image, and with his own supporters.</p> <p>“The President required that employees return to in-person work, restored accountability for employees who have policy-making authority, restored accountability for senior career executives, and reformed the federal hiring process to focus on merit,” a mass email said. “As a result of the above orders, the reform of the federal workforce will be significant.</p> <div class="links inline social-buttons-links tokens" id="block-socialsimpleblock"> <div class="social-buttons"> <div class="social-buttons-title">Share this article on</div> <ul class="links"> <li class="twitter"><a data-placement="top" data-popup-height="300" data-popup-width="600" data-toggle="tooltip" href="https://twitter.com/intent/tweet/?url=https%3A//portside.org/2025-01-29/trumps-buyout-offer-federal-workers-already-backfiring&amp;text=Trump%E2%80%99s%20%E2%80%9CBuyout%E2%80%9D%20Offer%20for%20Federal%20Workers%20Is%20Already%20Backfiring" title="Twitter"><i class="fa fa-twitter"></i><span class="visually-hidden">Twitter</span></a></li> <li class="facebook"><a data-placement="top" data-popup-height="300" data-popup-width="600" data-toggle="tooltip" href="https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A//portside.org/2025-01-29/trumps-buyout-offer-federal-workers-already-backfiring" title="Facebook"><i class="fa fa-facebook"></i><span class="visually-hidden">Facebook</span></a></li> <li class="mail"><a data-popup-open="false" href="mailto:?body=%0ATrump%E2%80%99s%20%E2%80%9CBuyout%E2%80%9D%20Offer%20for%20Federal%20Workers%20Is%20Already%20Backfiring%0Ahttps%3A//portside.org/2025-01-29/trumps-buyout-offer-federal-workers-already-backfiring&amp;subject=Trump%E2%80%99s%20%E2%80%9CBuyout%E2%80%9D%20Offer%20for%20Federal%20Workers%20Is%20Already%20Backfiring" title="Mail"><i class="fa fa-envelope"></i><span class="visually-hidden">Mail</span></a></li> </ul> </div> </div> <p>“If you resign under this program, you will retain all pay and benefits regardless of your daily workload and will be exempted from all applicable in-person work requirements until September 30, 2025 (or earlier if you choose to accelerate your resignation for any reason),” the email continues.</p> <p>Federal workers aren’t taking this lying down.</p> <p>“I’ll be honest, before that email went out, I was looking for any way to get out of this fresh hell,” said one user in the popular <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/fednews/comments/1icj3wc/this_non_buyout_really_seems_to_have_backfired/?share_id=Po2-ydCITo-65j8lUjs95&amp;utm_medium=ios_app&amp;utm_name=ioscss&amp;utm_source=share&amp;utm_term=1" target="_blank">r/fednews subreddit</a>. “But now I am fired up to make these goons as frustrated as possible, RTO be damned.”</p> <p>These sentiments were echoed throughout the thread.</p> <p>“I’ll continue to do my job and fight for the position I’ve earned,” another said. “It took me 10 years of applying and 20 years experience in my field to get here. I will not be pushed out by two billionaire trust funds babies. I’M NOT LEAVING!”</p> <p>“I’ve never been more motivated to stay. Before the ‘buyout’ memo, I was ready to go job hunting, but then a revelation hit.
