Our new #E3SM wildfire simulation captures how extreme fires can create their own thunderstorm clouds (pyroCb) by reproducing the 2020 Creek Fire pyroCb — a first in climate modeling.

While it may not look very robust, the #pyroCb near the UT/CO produced an EF-2 tornado on Saturday. The 00Z sounding from Grand Junction, CO shows a classic inverted-v pyroCb sounding with some instability beyond any fire-induced modification.

Roughly eyeball of the GOES IR temperatures for this #pyroCb are in the -47 to -50C range. Combined with the 00Z sounding from The Pas indicates that this pyroCb may have injected smoke into the stratosphere! This sounding is also the inverted-v common for pyroCb. weather.uwyo.edu/upperair/ima...

GOES-18 is currently providing a nice look at the large #pyroCb ongoing in Saskatchewan. The smoke that's been ingested into to the pyroCb looks visually different from both the surrounding convection (less white, more gray) and from the low level smoke from the fire (less brown, more gray). #SKwx

🔥Really fascinating share, Philippe.
That outflow didn’t just stir up smoke — it seemed to give the fire column the exact push it needed to burst upward.
Moments like this feel like fire and sky are syncing.
Do you see more of these patterns as heat extremes grow?

Pretty crazy situation @drdavepeterson.bsky.social alerted me in upper #Alberta n/ Fort McMurray, #Canada.

A major #wildfire near Chipewyan Lake triggered a large #PyroCb 🔥🌩️ where an outflow boundary has propagated E, overtaking other downstream wildfires.

2025 yet another horrific fire season.

2.5-minute #Himawari9 Visible / Shortwave Infrared / Infrared Window images showed signatures of 3 #pyrocumulonimbus cloud pulses (from 0832-0842 UTC) initiated by a wildfire in South Korea -- these are the first documented #pyroCb events on the Korean Peninsula.

The first-known #pyroCb in South Korea happened this morning (UTC) on a large fire near Uiseong. PyroCb are wildfire driven thunderstorms that can act like chimneys and transport smoke into the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere. H/T to the pyroCb community/email thread for catching this!

Australian bushfires so intense smoke crosses the Pacific to South America Writings on climate change, sea level rise, ocean acidification, biodiversity loss, climate adaptation & protests from a Melbourne Citizen Journalist.

Bushfires so intense in November that sevral #PYROCB cloud events injected smoke into the stratosphere crossing the Pacific to South America (where I was on my way to COP25 in Madrid) takvera.blogspot.com/2019/11/aust...

Ok, so now that I've picked my jaw up off the ground...

Yesterday was a terrible #pyroCB #lightning event in #BCwx and into #ABwx. Between 3pm June 30 and 6am July 1 (Pacific Time), the North American Lightning Detection Network detected 710,117 total lightning events.
