Interplay of Policy & Servingness The servingness framework acknowledges the external environment, including the policy context, that may help or hinder equity-minded approaches to serving Latine/x students in HSIs. HSI leaders must understand the sociohistorical and political landscape, including the role of state-level policies in relation to the HSI designation and the ways federal Title V and III funding shapes priorities around servingness. They must also understand the unique policy contexts and racial dynamics that influence the experiences of HSIs, particularly in terms of how diversity and equity policies as well as anti-DEI policies influence institutional discourse and practices.

STEM Servingness How do you infuse servingness into STEM at HSIs? This is one question all HSIs must grapple with because every student takes at least one STEM-based course, but many Latine/x students are also interested in STEM degrees and STEM careers. Culturally relevant and anti-racist approaches are essential in STEM education, especially at HSIs, as they validate students' identities and backgrounds. Several of our guests have stressed that mentoring and supporting Latine/x students in STEM at HSIs requires listening to their needs and aspirations, not just guiding them towards pre-determined paths. Creating access and flexibility in STEM courses, while also centering the lived realities of students of color at HSIs, is a necessary part of servingness.

Servingness in Community Colleges Community colleges are essential points of access for Latine/x college students, with approximately 40% of all HSIs being Hispanic-serving community colleges (HSCCs). But what is unique about the HSCC context? Community colleges were foundational in the early research and advocacy around HSIs, but the HSCC context is often overlooked. Studying HSCCs is crucial given their large enrollment of Latine/x students, and the abundance of HSCCs across the country. HSCCs can play a transformative role in helping students find meaning, purpose, and connection to their communities, but they must embrace their unique place within the population of HSIs. From faculty teaching practices to essential support services, HSCCs need to focus on cultural humility, self-reflection, and the demonstration of an ethic of care, with a keen focus on servingness.
