Last year, tireless campaigner Georgie Jackson-Jones wrote a guest blog for us, highlighting the horrific world of 'rabbit fancy'.
We stand with Georgie and all the organisations & individuals fighting to end this cruel 'hobby': bit.ly/rabbit_fancy_blog_ffa

🐰 It's #RabbitAwarenessWeek!
Rabbits are social, sensitive pets and they need more care than many realise.
Read Pet Alliance Europe's blog for tips on how you can make sure your little hoppers are the happiest they can be!

A photo of a white rabbit in profile, sitting in a tray full of hay. His face is mostly blank, but the pupils of his pink eyes are weirdly constricted, as if he is focusing on a bright light which is not present
The real question is: what are rabbits aware of?

A photo of a black rabbit, flattened against a bed and receiving pats. She is very velvety and a hand is resting on her shoulders. Her eyes are half-open and snoozy
A photo of a white rabbit, sleeping on a bed while receiving pats. A hand is resting gently against his face and he has lost all structural integrity, melting into the sheets. His big pink nose is framed by whiskers and his eyes are closed and sunken into his fluff
But if you're committed to it, I honestly think there's nothing better than being gently shoved in the ankles while you're making tea because you're apparently in the way of them navigating your kitchen for some reason. They're like weirder cats and it's great

A photo of a white rabbit peeking out of a large plastic tunnel
My flat is in a constant state of upgrading rabbit-proofing to keep them safe and deciding what is not worth it and can be chewed, and if that isn't something you're up for please do not house rabbits like I do. A rabbit room is a great solution for space and chaos management

A photo of a black rex rabbit, her body braced and her head thrown back, violently chewing the side of a light blue chair. The edges of the chair have seen better days, and the rabbit's eyes are wild as she drags at the fabric for more efficient destruction
Rabbits are terraformers in the wild and in your home they still have those instincts. Distracting them with acceptable things to destroy and chew is like giving your weird housemate a woodworking kit so they stop drilling holes in your walls. Otherwise sacrifices must be made

A photo of a white rabbit on a bed, surrounded with hay thrown from a tray in the corner as he jumped out. The hay covers the entire top of the bed, all over the pillows which he is comfortably loafing against. The sheets are embroidered to cover holes chewed by previous rabbits. The photographer feels that this is a perfect state of existence
It's not without its drawbacks...I really need to vacuum and my bed is full of hay (and sometimes pee), my sheets and clothes sprout mystery holes and I'm sometimes woken by an excited high-speed rex to the face, but hey, I'm annoying to live with too

A photo of a black rex rabbit sitting on top of a white human with glasses and short-cropped hair. The human is sitting hunched over on a lounge, reading from her phone, and the rabbit has taken the opportunity to climb on her back and stretch from there to rest her forelimbs on the top of the lounge pillows. She is staring expectantly at the photographer, her face tilted upwards to give a friendly side-eye. Though usually a round little slab of meat in photos, this pose shows how long and elegant her forelimbs are, and the shape of the muscles of her chest. She looks extremely comfortable using a human as a climbing prop
Anyway, back to being excited about house rabbits, man I love living with house rabbits. A lot of people will just have one rabbit room but mine free-roam all over the house. The more time you spend sharing space with rabbits the more fulfilling a relationship you will have

A screenshot of the journal article "Serum vitamin D concentrations in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) are more affected by UVB irradiation of food than irradiation of animals" Journal link: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1090023324000881
Recent research suggests that exposing rabbit food to UVB is more efficient at increasing vitamin d levels in rabbits than exposing rabbits to UVB, and rabbits seem to metabolise calcium weirder than we thought, so I'm not super concerned about my buns being mostly indoor

A photo of a white rabbit, stretching up as far as he can to eat some plants through a mesh barrier designed to make this difficult for him. He is on his very tiptoes, his back arched and his forelimbs pulling him up on the edge of the planter. His muscles can be seen through his fluff, an impressive feat
Our risks are fortunately very low, but they still never go out if someone isn't a couple of meters away, aware of what is going on, and I'm weighing those risks against the benefits of them doing some extra athletic foraging behaviours

A photo taken down the length of a bed. At the foot of the bed is a bookshelf with some clothes and blankets piled onto it. On top of this is a white rabbit, investigating what chaos he may pursue
The Rabbit Action Awareness Group (who run #RabbitAwarenessWeek) have a really good website here: rabbitawarenessactiongroup.co.uk . It's good stuff, though as an Australian I would add the modifier that I don't support housing rabbits outside here
A photo taken down the hallway of a house, showing an array of round little pillows forming a chaotic path over the floorboards, a bright green tunnel for running through and a wooden box filled with hay with a litter tray of hay on top of it. A small black rabbit can be seen poking her head around the corner to observe the photographer
I'm always slow off the bat for #RabbitAwarenessWeek, I think because it's UK-based and there isn't an equivalent here and for some reason none of us exotics vets in Aus really get on making it a thing, which I think is a shame. It's a nice opportunity for some advocacy. This year is about housing
Right on our doorstep, thousands of rabbits are being killed in pointless experiments like this one. This has to stop.

Just imagine what they are feeling.
There are BETTER ways to test products than using animals for these archaic procedures.
