Raymond “Rae” Preston, a disabled who identified as LQBTQ2+, was tortured and brutally murdered in his home on the San Carlos Apache Reservation (AZ) in the Bylas district in the RTG community. The alleged suspects 1-male and 1-female were later apprehended for questioning. Indigenous and LGBTQ2S+ individuals face disproportionate rates of violence, with systemic failures leading to vast underreporting and incomplete data on violence and deaths. LGBTQ2S+ Indigenous people, including Two-Spirit individuals, are particularly vulnerable due to the intersection of racism, homophobia, and transphobia rooted in colonial violence. We must do better at bringing awareness and fighting for our Two Spirit relatives. Because Rae was a member of the LGBTQ2+ community doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be actively involved and advocating.
