I was a parent on a year3 school trip to #ReadingMuseum to see their tapestry made in the 19thc. The last part drew giggles all day because the Victorian ladies had stitched pants on their version of the naked man and the museum had a photo of the original, sans pants. A great way to excite them 😂

Say what you like about the Greeks.
I don’t know of many cultures which produce art where the woman is fully dressed and the man fully naked.

In 1885, thirty-five members of the Leek Embroidery Society set out to make an exact copy of the Bayeux Tapestry. It’s on display in the Reading Museum and well worth a visit!

The Silchester Eagle, on display in Reading Museum. A remarkable find, it’s made of cast bronze and was founded in 1866 in the remains of the basilica at the Roman town of Silchester. It was probably once part of a statue #romaneagle #readingmuseum #rome #ancientrome #silchester

Victorian copy of Bayeux Tapestry held by Reading Museum. Created by Leek Embroidery Society, they began work 1885 never having seen the original. Not identical (they removed penises from humans and horses), it is a magnificent project #readingmuseum #bayeuxtapestry #readingbayeux

I love that the little naked figure underneath the unidentified Aelfgifu in the Bayeux Tapestry has been given a pair of stripy underpants by the Victorian embroiderers of the amazing Reading Museum copy of the tapestry #readingmuseum #readingbayeux #bayeuxtapestry
