Here is the official spin from MLA LaGrange: they claim to have "delivered" the $1.8-billion hospital expansion. The reality? Red Deer has been waiting for this vital expansion for 8 + years, and the problem remains exactly the same as last year—the initial plans were scrapped and had to be redone, and they are still waiting. Critically, there is still NO permanent Cath Lab (cardiac catheterization laboratory) for emergency procedures (Cath Lab completion scheduled now 2030-2031). This is a critical failure. A relative of mine had a heart attack last year and had to be transported via ambulance from Red Deer to the U of A Hospital for an angioplasty and stent insertion, only to face a three-day delay for the procedure because the system was overwhelmed. Beyond the humanitarian tragedy, this delay is fiscally reckless. Just think of the massive, recurring cost of ambulance transportation alone all these years; Red Deer patients are routinely routed to Calgary or Edmonton, often with life-threatening consequences. Don't mistake a budget commitment for a finished hospital. that could have been built as promised years ago.
