All-sky map showing the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) dipole anisotropy. The colors represent temperature variations caused by the motion of our Local Group of galaxies relative to the CMB at 600 km/s. Blueshifted (hotter) radiation is in the direction of motion, redshifted (colder) in the opposite direction. This high speed and its cause remain unexplained.

All-sky map of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) showing the dipole anisotropy caused by the motion of the Local Group of galaxies relative to the CMB rest frame. The blueshifted (hotter) region indicates the direction of motion, while the redshifted (colder) region is opposite. This map reveals our Local Group is moving at ~600 km/s, a speed whose cause remains a mystery.
