Ukrainian-born Russian artist Ilya Yefimovich Repin created many depictions of his daughter Nadezhda Ilyinichna Repina including this 1892 oil painting portraying her wearing a hunting outfit with a rifle slung over her back.

She wears a simple, loose-fitting, off-white tunic-style garment that appears well-worn. Over this, she has a dark green strap across her body, carrying a long rifle across her back. Her black hat is slightly tilted, and she has dark hair partially visible under it. Her expression is serious and somewhat impatient. Her right hand rests on her hip where a thick leather belt is cinched, and the other hand rests at her side on the butt of the rifle.

The background is a blurry, impressionistic landscape of muted greens and browns, suggestive of fields or farmland. The overall impression is one of quiet independence and resilience, possibly hinting at themes of rural life, war, or resistance. The muted color palette and the focus on the woman's countenance create a contemplative mood.

Repin became one of the most renowned artists in Russia in the 19th century. Born in Chuguev, Ukraine, he began painting icons at 16. He failed at his first effort to enter the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg, but went to the city anyway in 1863, audited courses, and won his first prizes in 1869 and 1871. In 1872, after a tour along the Volga River, he presented his drawings at the Academy of Art in St. Petersburg. Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich awarded him a commission for a large scale painting, “The Barge Haulers of the Volga,” which launched his career. He spent two years in Paris and Normandy, seeing the first Impressionist expositions and learning the techniques of painting outdoors.

In May 1872, he married Vera Alexeievna Shevtsova and his second daughter, Nadezhda, was born in 1874 … which makes her about 18 in this painting. By this time, Repin had already met writer Natalia Nordman, who became his common-law wife.

In 1873, Russian artist Ilya Repin, as a graduate of the Imperial Academy of Arts, traveled to Paris, France where he studied realism. This painting of an idealized "African Woman" was heavily influenced by that trip. The work shows Repin’s interest in the creative styles of the talented Spanish academic artist Mariano Fortuny.

Repin created an expressive "exotic" image of a dark-skinned woman, adorned in opulent gold jewelry and traditional clothing, sitting serenely on a richly patterned rug, near a hookah and a coffee set, creating an atmosphere of quiet dignity and cultural richness.

Repin displays mastery in depicting sparkling golden decorations, shimmering fabrics and the brilliant hookah. He used a variety of painting techniques from smooth strokes to dense brushwork that is seen in the accessories.

The young woman wears a long, loose-fitting, off-white outfit plus baggy pants with vertical stripes of muted colors and floral patterns as she relaxes cross-legged. Her expression is unrelenting and and direct as she gazes steadily at the viewer, giving the painting an air of quiet strength and self-awareness.

She is adorned with gold jewelry including a heavy necklace of large gold medallions, several gold bracelets on her wrists, and long golden earrings. The light reflecting off the jewelry contrasts beautifully with her gorgeous dark skin.

The setting is rather dark, a moody but warm palette of browns and reds dominating the background. The woman sits on a rug with intricate designs in muted reds, oranges, and browns. Behind her, a richly ornamented divan is visible, echoing the intricate patterns of the rug.

To the left, a water pipe (hookah) sits on an ornate wooden stand with intricate inlaid details. The hookah itself is also exquisitely decorated. A long, dark-green hose is coiled onto the floor. Near her feet are a pair of slippers plus a coffee pot and small cup on a tray.

The overall atmosphere is one of contemplation and understated luxury.

Veeery nice, saw him in Helsinki. Not Ilya Repin, whose work at the "Russian Museum" (Repin was Ukrainian) I saw even twice, stunned - but very good indeed. #GallenKallela #Repin

I LOVE SKETCHES FROM RUSSIAN WRITERS SO MUCH....
This is a sketch of Repin by Mayakovsky. Repin said about the drawing: "extremely realistic!". Mayakovsky still has many drawings in his letters to Lilya Brik. Be sure to watch!
