She is best known for her quiet dignity when refusing to move to the back of a bus, despite the angry bus driver repeatedly telling her to do just that. It was a flash point in civil relations in the bitterly segregated town of Montgomery, Alabama. The majority of bus riders in the city were Black, but a public order from the early 1900s stipulated that Black riders had to use seats in the back and leave seats at the front of the bus empty for white riders.

On December 1st, 1955, Parks – who was Black – paid her fare and went to sit in the middle section of the bus, next to a Black man and across from two Black women.
The whites-only seats filled up and after seeing a white passenger standing, the bus driver demanded that Black passengers yield their seats in the middle rows. The three other riders sitting near Parks complied, but Parks remained seated. Years later, she said, “I felt that, if I did stand up, it meant that I approved of the way I was being treated, and I did not approve.” When the driver said he would call police and have Parks arrested, she said, “You may do that.” She was arrested, which led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. For more than a year, almost all of the Black townspeople refused to ride the city’s buses. In 1956 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that segregated public transportation was unconstitutional – effectively ending the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
